Chapter 649
Whether Hawthorne was telling the truth or not, Yvette’s grandfather understood all too well: Yvette had no chance with Hawthorne anymore.
“Grandpa, why are you still talking to him?”
Yvette’s eyes brimmed with tears of frustration. Hawthorne really was hopeless- how could he tell Grandpa he was already married? Who was his wife, and where was she?
Was he just saying that to turn her down? Or was he simply too embarrassed to admit his feelings?
Yvette wiped her tears away and decided to confront things head-on.
“Hawthorne, just tell me plainly-what do you really mean? All these years you’ve looked out for me, and I agreed to marry you.”
Her grandfather never imagined his granddaughter could be so shameless. He felt utterly humiliated.
“Yvette, that’s enough.”
She stamped her foot. “Grandpa, at this point, what’s left to hide? Hawthorne’s so dense-if he won’t say something for the sake of our relationship, then I will.”
Her grandfather’s face turned a dark shade of green.
Did Yvette really not get it? Hawthorne clearly wasn’t interested-what was she thinking?
“Yvette-” he warned.
Realizing he couldn’t win this, Yvette’s grandfather shot Hawthorne an apologetic look. “Hawthorne, please don’t mind my granddaughter. She’s just had too much to drink and is talking nonsense.”
Hawthorne set his teacup down with a calm expression. “It’s alright. I actually came today on behalf of my wife.”
Yvette was gearing up to confront him further, but when she heard him say “my wife” again and again, she snapped, “And just who is your wife?”
Hawthorne looked her straight in the eye, lips moving quietly but firmly: “Gwyneth.”
Yvette was stunned. No way-absolutely impossible. Gwyneth’s husband-no, her lover-was some old guy. The whole office saw it today. Everyone was gossiping about Gwyneth; there was just no way.
“You’re lying.”
Before Yvette’s grandfather could stop her, Hawthorne intervened. “Let me handle this.”
He turned to the old man. “Sir, I think there’s been a misunderstanding. Gwyneth js, my wife. She’s very driven, sol invited her to work at the company rather than let her struggle somewhere else. However, your granddaughter has repeatedly disrespected her, using her position
as vice president. I’m here today because of that.”
Yvette’s dreams shattered completely. She stood rooted to the spot, her face flushing and paling in turn.
“I originally hoped to keep her at the company, but after she left my wife stranded in the outskirts for hours under the sun… I’m the CEO. No senior staff is ever allowed to mistreat an employee like that. If someone makes a mistake, we can let them go, but personal vendettas have no place here.”
He placed his cup on the coffee table. The gesture was gentle, but to Yvette’s grandfather, it landed like a hammer blow. He finally

He didn’t dare act superior any longer; not even the king himself could save Yvette now.
“May I ask when’s the wedding? I’d be honored to raise a glass at your celebration.”
That was the only way he could salvage a shred of dignity-thank goodness his age at least allowed him to save face for Yvette’s blunder. If it had been anyone else, Hawthorne probably wouldn’t have been so forgiving.
“The Greenvale ceremony will be at the end of the year. For the autumn festival, we’re heading to Starfall City to visit my mother-in-law.”
