Chapter 369
“I’m busy right now,” Eileen replied, staring at her watch. She didn’t think there was anything for them to talk about.
Zola seemed to expect her refusal. She quickly added, “It’s about Milford.”
That excuse seemed quite stale. Milford had been in Atlanta for a while now, and Zola hadn’t reached out to him since their last argument over a year ago.
“Let’s go then. I have a meeting in twenty minutes,” Eileen said, pointing at a coffee shop across the street.
The café was almost empty as it was noon.
They both ordered a cup of coffee. Eileen stirred hers with a small spoon as she waited for Zola to speak.
Zola, however, said nothing and instead stared into her coffee.
“It’s been ten minutes,” Eileen stated.
“Have you gotten back together with Bryan?” Zola asked. She hadn’t seen Bryan for a while, but she had heard he had been in a car accident.
Although the news had been suppressed, Zola could tell that Bryan’s car accident had something to do with Eileen.
Eileen took a sip of her coffee, leaving a milky stain on the edge of her lips. She grabbed a tissue and carefully wiped it away.
“Given the current situation, I’ll say we’ve won,” Eileen said. “I just wanted to give you a chance to vent so I don’t seem harsh in my victory. Your criticism of me makes no difference. What I won’t tolerate, however, is you expecting me to forget our past and just hand Bryan over to you. You can try to take Bryan from me if you feel you can, but beyond that, I have nothing else to say to you.” She leaned back in her chair, clearly bored with the conversation.

Eileen then took her purse, preparing to leave.
“Wait a minute,” Zola hurriedly said.
“What else?” Eileen asked, standing up.
“How—how is Milford doing? Has he adjusted to high school life? He’s a high school sophomore, right? How is he coping? Could you arrange for him to have dinner with me?” Zola asked.
She had called Milford several times, but each time, they ended up arguing again. Eventually, they blocked each other.
Eileen paused, then finally said, “I’ll have him get in touch with you. Also, he is no longer in high school. He was allowed to skip two grades because of how smart he is. He got into Willowbrook University.”
“What?” A feeling of joy, tinged with a pang of regret, washed over Zola. “Willowbrook? Was his high school performance truly exceptional?”
“I don’t know exactly, but it was more than enough to ensure admission to Willowbrook. You can ask him yourself,” Eileen said, before taking her leave.
