Bryan set his phone aside and carefully withdrew his arm from beneath her.
He covered her with a blanket, then quietly exited the ward.
The night was still.
Outside in the garden, about eight tall figures lingered. As Bryan stepped out, Josue approached him swiftly.
“How’s everything going? Are you feeling alright?” Josue asked.
“Yeah, I feel fine,” Bryan responded as he walked over to a bench and sat down, his body relaxing slightly.
He had been anxious that Eileen might probe further.
Thankfully, Eileen was still overwhelmed and hadn’t noticed anything amiss.
Just then, a doctor approached and took Bryan’s blood.
“The test results from this afternoon are clear—no signs of drug-related substances.” Josue sat down next to Bryan, his voice laced with contempt. “That bastard monopolizes the drug trade. How many families has he ruined? Whatever drug he has concocted…”
It couldn’t be anything good!
But he didn’t finish his thought. Though Bryan’s blood had been tested, there was no telling what substance he might have been given.
Their concern deepened the more they considered it.
“The real problem is, Coen got away,” Jacob spat. “That scoundrel is bent on revenge. He might be lying low somewhere now. If he decides to strike back and drags us down with him…”
Before Jacob could finish speaking, Bryan fixed him with a piercing gaze, making him fall silent.
Bryan’s eyes, deep and grave, held a solemnity that lingered persistently.
“Mr. Dawson, please monitor yourself closely. If you feel any discomfort, inform us immediately,” the doctor said, putting away the blood sample.
Then, he administered a shot of a drug resistance agent to Bryan, designed to neutralize any drugs in his system.
“Dewitt mentioned that in Coen’s absence, their forces have surrounded his former location and seized his lab. Once they find the latest drug, they’ll work on making an antidote.” Josue’s brow furrowed with concern. “But are you sure you don’t want to tell Eileen? What if, one day, you don’t wake up? Aren’t you worried about leaving things unsaid?”
Bryan dabbed the needle mark with a cotton swab.
Without looking up, he replied, “Eileen’s stronger than you might think, yet more delicate than you can imagine.”
Above all, he couldn’t bear the thought of seeing her fall apart. If his time came sooner than expected…
He could only consider himself selfish.
The doctor drawing Bryan’s blood wasn’t affiliated with the hospital but was an expert in drugs.
