Chapter 540
At the sound of the door, she was startled and quickly hid in Ruby’s embrace.
“Don’t be afraid; it’s your mommy,” Ruby tried to comfort Gabriela, gently stroking her back.
Eileen moved closer and gently coaxed Gabriela to lift her head from Ruby’s hug.
When Gabriela saw Eileen, she began to cry, tears rolling down her cheeks.
She sobbed deeply and reached out for a hug.
Eileen’s heart softened as she embraced her daughter.
Gabriela clutched at Eileen’s collar, and Eileen cuddled her face against Gabriela’s chin and cheek.
Half an hour later, Bryan completed the discharge process.
Rejoining Eileen, he found Gabriela still unsettled but more composed than when she was with Ruby on the way back home.
Once home, Bryan offered to hold Gabriela, but she clung to Eileen.
Eileen said, “Just let me hold her. You didn’t sleep well last night. Maybe you should take a nap now.”
But Bryan was in no mood to sleep.
His phone kept buzzing in his pocket, so he went upstairs.
Entering the study, he answered the call.

“Mr. Dawson. Last night, Mr. Wright secretly drove to the seaside area to pick someone up…”
Sitting on the playmat, Ruby watched Gabriela in Eileen’s arms. Not even Gabriela’s beloved rubber duck could brighten her mood. Ruby felt her heart sink.
“It’s my fault. I should have watched Gabriela more closely,” Ruby said.
“Don’t blame yourself,” Eileen said, moving closer and handing her a tissue. “Our lives are usually calm. Against those lurking in the shadows, we stand no chance. If they really come after us, we won’t be able to defeat them. Thankfully, we’re all safe for now. I just hope Coen gets caught soon so that we can live without fear.”
Those things were all new to Ruby. The very sight of guns had left her petrified.
She had stayed awake all night, and the sound of gunfire still rang in her ears, even when she wasn’t carrying Gabriela.
When she and Gabriela were led down the mountain, the sound of gunfire had filled the hills, and helicopters had buzzed overhead.
“I’ve also frightened you this time,” Eileen said, not blaming Ruby.
She had watched the surveillance video. The attackers had targeted Gabriela alone.
Yet Ruby had insisted on accompanying Gabriela.
It was clear that Ruby had put her life on the line for Gabriela’s safety.
