Chapter 681
A sharp pain shot through Eileen’s forehead as she tried to recall the moments before the accident. Slowly, her memory returned.
“How is she, doctor?”
Eileen was about to speak when she heard Phoebe’s voice.
Eileen turned towards the voice and saw Jacob, Josue, and Phoebe entering the room, their faces etched with worry.
“I’m fine. I just got scraped,” Eileen said.
“You were hit by a truck! If it hadn’t been going slow, you could have been killed!” Josue exclaimed. He knew Eileen had pushed herself to the limit after caring for Bryan for so many days.
Realization finally dawned on Eileen.
The doctor meticulously cleaned the wound on Eileen’s forehead and reassured her, “It’s just a small wound. With proper care, it should heal well and avoid any scarring. The X-ray shows no concussion, but you’re suffering from hypoglycemia. You need to rest more and stick to regular meals.”
“Did you hear that, Eileen?” Phoebe’s tone carried a hint of scolding. “If you keep pushing yourself to the brink like this, how will you ever manage to look after Bryan?”
But no sooner had Phoebe spoken than a wave of regret washed over her.
Eileen’s face turned pale, and her eyes clouded with a distant look. She grew quieter after Bryan’s name had been mentioned.
“I’ve prescribed some medication for her. You can settle the bill now,” the doctor said, handing the receipt to Josue. Josue and Jacob then left the ward with the doctor.
Now, only Phoebe and Eileen remained in the room.

Phoebe took Eileen’s hands in hers and said, “Eileen, I know you’re struggling right now, but you have to take care of yourself. If you don’t, what’s going to happen next?
You need to be strong.
“The doctor said that Bryan is stable and might wake up soon. You still have Gabriela to care for, and Bailee and Ruby are waiting for you. You have so many people who care about you.”
After a heavy silence, Eileen finally spoke. “Now I understand why Bryan chose to stay in that small village before, even though it meant he might never come back.”
Her voice was rough, and tears glistened in her eyes as she spoke.
The waiting, she realized, was more torturous than the pain of thinking he had died. It was a relentless suffering.
Eileen muttered, “I shouldn’t have gone to look for him before, right? At least that way, I could still hold on to the hope that he might still be alive. But now…”
Bryan was indeed still alive, but he couldn’t give her any hope.
This was sheer torment for Eileen.
Bryan lay on the bed, within reach, so close that Eileen could touch him. As she leaned over, she could hear the steady rhythm of his heartbeat and the evenness of his breathing. Yet, despite these signs of life, he remained unresponsive.
