Conroy was engaged in a conversation with someone who warmly grasped his hand and said, “Mr. Finch, the success of VQ Group is all thanks to you. I’m curious, does the company now belong to the Vazquez family or to you?”
The question was delicate, and the area was crowded with people. Conroy responded with a polite chuckle. “You must be joking. The VQ Group will always be part of the Vazquez family. I manage it in honor of my late wife. We can discuss this another time.”
Everyone admired his response. They saw him as a kind man with dignity, so no one would question Conroy’s intentions with the group, even if he took it over in the future.
Conroy smiled modestly at the gathering. But his smile vanished when he spotted Eileen.
He had seen Bryan earlier with Gabriela and assumed Eileen hadn’t attended. He hadn’t expected to see her when the banquet was nearing its end.
Another man approached Conroy, and he returned the greeting with a forced smile. He then excused himself from the group and quickly made his way to Eileen, pulling her toward the balcony of the banquet hall.
“You… How did you manage to get in here?” Conroy asked. The balcony’s window was thin, and the chilly air seeped through. Clad in a light dress, Eileen shivered and said coldly, “I just walked in.”
Conroy furrowed his brow and added, “I mean, how did you manage to enter the banquet hall? You mentioned no entry for minors.”
“I’m not a minor,” Eileen stated confidently. She then raised her eyebrows, saying, “Then how did you end up in charge of VQ Group? Moreover, it belongs to the Vazquez family. Why wasn’t I informed?”
The matter was laid bare, leaving Conroy without an opportunity to lie or cover it up.
He paused for a long moment before replying, “I just didn’t want to cause you any worry.”
“You didn’t want me to worry, or you didn’t want me to spend your money?” Eileen questioned, her brow furrowed.
Conroy often found himself unprepared for Eileen’s blunt inquiries. “What do you mean money? The money belongs to the Vazquez family, and thus to you as well.”
“Well, it’s good…” Eileen began, her tone thoughtful.
Eileen smiled slightly, “So why didn’t you tell me that VQ Group belongs to the Vazquez family?”
Realizing that Eileen was determined to uncover the truth, Conroy felt the urge to flee.
“Here’s the situation. Currently, VQ Group is facing some challenges,” he began.
Feigning sudden realization, Eileen interjected, “Oh, the company is facing bankruptcy? You kept it from me because you didn’t want me to worry?”
Conroy nodded quickly, sensing something was amiss but couldn’t quite place it.
“What a pity. I thought I was a wealthy lady just now, and that I wouldn’t need to earn money anymore. Seems like I still have to work for a living,” Eileen said with a hint of regret.
“Yes,” Conroy responded hastily.
“But it’s not suitable for you to work at VQ Group. You’d do better to work elsewhere and help support our family,” he added.
“But I’m earning money from Mr. Dawson, not from the Group. Mr. Dawson hired me to be his daughter’s nanny. Doesn’t that mean he pays me?” Eileen said.
