“I just saved you. You owe me. Help me with my divorce from Mabel,” Julio said.
“Did I ask for your help?” Dalores retorted sharply, stepping hard on his foot. The sudden pain made Julio wince and loosen his hold. Seizing the moment, Dalores quickly pulled away from him.
With a serious look, she said, “You’ve been a part of my life for years. Regardless of our past, whether it was good or bad, I want to close this chapter gracefully. Please, don’t make me resent you. I’d rather look back with gratitude than hatred, okay?”
Hatred? She actually used this word.
Her gaze at him felt so strange that it made Julio’s heart sink.
Dalores turned to leave, her steps echoing her resolve, but her departure was halted by a sudden commotion. The familiar figure from her own household burst into the hospital, cradling Emerson in her arms. Panic colored her shouts. “Help! This child has a high fever, and he might be going into shock!”
Instantly springing into action, the nurse at the reception dashed forward, swiftly escorting Emerson into the emergency room. Without a second thought, Dalores followed, her maternal instincts overriding everything else.
Seeing this, Julio frowned, and he hurried after Dalores.
Outside the emergency room, the nurse halted the nanny. “Are you the child’s family? We need you to come and sign some necessary forms immediately.”
“I’m not,” the nanny admitted, her voice shaking with anxiety.
Just then, her gaze caught Dalores approaching, and relief washed over her face. “That’s the child’s family!” she said, directing the nurse to Dalores.
As Dalores hurried over, she caught the reflection of a figure in the window behind her. Her heart skipped a beat.
At that moment, the nanny raced over to Dalores, pointing urgently at her and speaking to the nurse.
“She is the child’s family. She can sign the forms!”
Dalores composed herself under the weight of Julio’s watchful eyes and approached the nurse.
“I’m the child’s… stepmother. Let me sign the forms.”
“Alright, please follow me,” the nurse said briskly, handing her several documents and directing her where to sign.
Feeling the intensity of Julio’s stare on her back, Dalores felt uncomfortable but managed to keep her composure as she signed the forms.
The nanny then took the card to handle the payment, leaving Dalores alone outside the resuscitation room. Dalores turned to find Julio standing at the far end of the corridor, leaning against the wall of the designated smoking area. He seemed to have gone through several cigarettes already, his gaze piercing.
The sight of Julio made Dalores’ heart sink further. She was focused on Emerson’s well-being, afraid that Julio would notice something unusual about her.
