“Are you going to tell Julio about this?” It wasn’t until Eileen noticed the couples that she remembered there was a higher likelihood of a successful bone marrow match for leukemia treatment between immediate family members.
Dalores hesitated.
“I’ve been pondering it all night, but I’m unsure if I should share it with him.”
It was unfair for Dalores to carry the burden alone. If Emerson didn’t have leukemia, it wouldn’t be an issue. But if he were truly diagnosed with leukemia and the bone marrow match failed, Dalores would eventually have to tell Julio about this.
Eileen stood quietly and didn’t say anything else. Ten minutes passed before Emerson was carried out of the room, his face crimson from crying.
“You can go back now. We’ll notify you as soon as the results are available.” The nurse called another couple, signaling that it was time for Eileen to leave with Dalores.
“Emerson had a blood test done yesterday when he was unwell, and we’re expecting the results of another test today. I have to go get them before I leave,” Dalores explained.
Seeing that Dalores was struggling, Eileen offered, “Why don’t I take Emerson to the waiting area, and you can get the results?”
Once Dalores told her where to get the report, Eileen quickly stepped into the elevator to go there. As she approached the spot to pick up the report, she saw two people in the distance.
Wearing masks, they were dragging Conroy along, with Jessica saying, “You need to take a test! The cancer gene is incredibly dangerous. It means you’re at risk of having cancer. My grandparents’ accidental death meant they never had the chance to face cancer, but if they were still alive…”

She kept talking as she dragged the reluctant Conroy with her. Just as they were about to reach Eileen, Eileen quickly found a spot to hide. Although Eileen couldn’t clearly hear what was being said, she could easily guess that Jessica was taking Conroy to get a physical examination here.
Eileen pressed her lips together and trailed behind Jessica and Conroy, observing as they underwent a series of medical tests, including blood draws, ECGs, brain CT scans, and other examinations.
Eileen then went to the spot where the blood was drawn. She picked up the form that Jessica had accidentally left behind and said to the nurse stationed there, “Hello, I’m a friend of the two people who just had their blood drawn. They also want to do a paternity test, if that’s possible.”
“You’ll need to inform the doctor and let the doctor arrange the test,” the nurse replied.
Eileen’s attempt to capitalize on the loophole failed. Left with no other choice, she simply thanked the nurse and turned around to leave.
As she was trying to think of a solution, Bryan called her. Perhaps it was because she had done something wrong, but her mood was low when she explained.
“I just saw Jessie and Conroy getting checked out at the hospital. I tried to discreetly add a paternity test to their exams, but the hospital wouldn’t permit it.”
“Of course, the hospital wouldn’t permit it,” Bryan replied sharply. “Haven’t you been away from work so long that you’ve become clueless about basic procedures?”
