I know I’m gettingalittle hostile right now, but Patrick is getting on my fucking nerves by constantly staring at Vanessa.
“I didn’tsayyou weren’t takingcareof her,” hesayswith a nervous chuckle.
“Then what did you mean by that?”Iraise my chin, my forehead creasing.
“Iwasjustsaying that she deserves thebest.”
“And I’m giving her the best.”
“Obviously, that’s why she’ssohappy. I’m sorry ifIsounded like I was out of line. I just feel awful up until this day. I just want her to be happy after everything that I put her through.”
“She’s definitely happy with me. I’m sure you canseethat.”
“Yesand that’s why she always talks about you when we meet.”
“Shedoes?”Iclearmy throat,thecreaseson my forehead fading.
“Yes, she does.” He slightly tilts his head, hisgazea little intense as he smiles. “Honestly,ifI could go back in time, I’d do things differently with her and I’d never let her go. Thank the universe that time travel doesn’t exist.”
I can’t tell if he’s being serious right now or if thisissupposed to be a joke. If it is, it’s definitely not funny.
Theairis thick with tension between us and I don’t want it to carry on,so I change the subject.
“I’m curious about your current love life.”
“No, I haven’t been in a relationship for so many years. I didn’t have the time or energy for it. I didn’tseemyself committing to someone when Ihavesomuch toworkon andIstill do.”
“Isee.”
“Vanessahassucha big heart. Shecaresandlovesdeeply.”
“Shedoes.” I smile a little, thinking about how the children love her so much.
“That’s whysheoffered to help me and I won’tletthis opportunity go towaste.”
You better not I get a little serious
“Shecould’vejustlet me be with my job thedaywe met at the orphanage, but she offered to give meafreshstart. I’venevercomeacrossanyone like her. I remember seeingheron TV when she went to the children’s hospital and had a problem with her leg, but she still went around to see everyone.”
Ifurrowmyeyebrowsinsurprise. “Thatmeansyou’vebeen seeing her around for a while.”
“Of course Ihave.Ijustdidn’twanttoappearbeforeher.Iaskedmyself where I would evenstartand if she would benicetome.IguessIwasworried for nothing, becausehereIamnow.”
He looks outsideagain, stroking his chin withdelight. I know he’s looking at her but this time, hisheadmovements andeyesslowly change direction andthat’show I know she’s on herwaybackinside.Doesn’t hecarethatI’m righthereand seeing this? I’dcallhim out for it, butit’snot like that’ll stop himlateron.
NowthatI’ve seen him lookingathersolustfully, Ihavethisdesirenot to leave her alone with him.
“Hey,did I take too long?” she says assheapproachesthetable.

“I hope you enjoy your meal,” hesaysto her with a smile, stealing another glance.
“I definitely will.” She chuckles.
I tighten the grip on my fork, stabbing into the beef.Basedon their reaction,it’salittle extreme, so I shift in my seat to compose myself.
As the meatgetscloserto my lips, they both look at me in anticipation and I realize it’s because they want to see my reaction to the taste.
A few seconds after I taste the beef, I’m completely blown away by the flavor.
“Wow, thisisthebestbeef I’ve ever had.” I nod with approval.
“I told you earlier that you’d enjoy it,” Patrick says, looking proud that I’m blown away.
While we all enjoy our food, he keeps talking to her about the funny moments from theirpastand I wonder why he’s doing this right now. He still has those lustful eyes each time he glances at her.
Doesshe even realize it? Of course she does. That’s why she was so close to him and let him hold her the way he did when she stepped out of the
car.
“Babe,” Vanessa begins, grabbing my attention. “Patrick told me that he saw you yesterday.”
Patrick suddenly coughs a few times, like he’s just choked on his food.
“Are you okay?”She leans toward him with concern.
“I’m fine,” he assures herastheir eyes lock.
It makes me want to stab some beef again, but I’ve already run out of it.
“So, where did youseeme yesterday?”
My question breaks theireyecontact as I turn curious.
