Wanda’s face stiffened as she listened to Wyatt and the woman on the phone exchange words, completely ignoring her. At last, she could no longer keep up appearances. Snatching her bag in anger, she stormed out of the private room.
The moment she stepped outside, she nearly collided with a child.
The little girl, four or five years old, round–cheeked with a tiny bun and soft curls at her temples, held a cup of yogurt in both hands. She skidded to a stop just in time, clutching her snack protectively as Wanda came barreling out.
Wanda frowned–then her eyes caught the details: the girl’s “plain” clothes were actually the most exclusive children’s fashion, and on her wrist gleamed a limited–edition watch she’d once seen in a magazine–only ten existed in the world.
And the way the girl had been running–straight toward Wyatt’s private room.
Not far away, Wyatt’s chief bodyguard stood watch, casually holding a backpack in one hand and a toy figure in the other.
A light went on in Wanda’s mind. This child was definitely connected to Wyatt. But she couldn’t possibly be his daughter.
Rumors five years back had claimed Wyatt’s ex–wife bore a son, but Wyatt had driven her away in fury for scheming to keep his child. Since then, he’d remained alone. If he didn’t even want a son, how could this girl belong to him? More likely a relative’s child.
Still–if she could use the girl to get closer to Wyatt…
Mindy was studying her in return. Her innocent eyes lingered on Wanda’s chest before she piped up sweetly, “Are you really poor? That’s so sad…”
Wanda blinked, thrown.
Mindy pointed straight at her neckline. “Your mom and dad can’t even buy you proper clothes? Even your grandpa’s wife is sticking out.”
Wanda nearly choked, rolling her eyes. Pretty face, she thought, but clearly brainless.
Then she remembered–this was Wyatt’s relative. She swallowed her irritation and bent down with a false smile. “Little one, there’s a very fierce man in that room. He won’t yell at a beautiful lady like me, but if you
go in, he’ll throw you out. You’d better leave.”

Mindy gave her an up–and–down look. She’d already pegged Wanda as bad news the second she saw her storming out.
She clutched her yogurt and dashed toward the private room. “I don’t believe you! Mr. Wyatt loves me best–he’d never scold me.”
Wanda grabbed her arm sharply. “Wait—you called him Mr. Wyatt?””
Her eyes gleamed, but she schooled her expression into worry. “Oh, so you are precious to him. No wonder you’re so sure. But sadly, your place isn’t safe anymore.”
Mindy blinked, baffled.
Wanda leaned closer, voice syrupy and coaxing. “I just saw your Mr. Wyatt being very close with another lady. You know what that means? If he has a new girlfriend, he’ll give her everything, and you’ll have nothing. She’ll hate you and push you out.”
Mindy tilted her head, blinking her big eyes. “What do you mean?”
Wanda smiled softly, confident she had the child hooked. “It means he won’t play with you anymore. He won’t buy you toys. They’ll have a new baby, and he won’t like you at all.”
She studied Mindy’s face, waiting for panic, tears–something.
But the little girl only smiled, sweet and guileless. “Thanks, but that’s impossible.”
Wanda froze, then smirked inwardly. Denial. The child just couldn’t face reality.
She pressed harder. “Silly girl, that’s exactly how men are. New lady, no more baby. You see, didn’t even bring you with him—he’s out on a date.”
Mindy frowned thoughtfully, then suddenly pointed behind Wanda. “Your dress has a dirty spot back there.”
Wanda gasped, spinning around in alarm. “Where? Where is it?”
She was wearing this season’s newest design, and today of all days, she couldn’t afford a flaw.
“A little lower,” Mindy said innocently, hand lifting–yogurt cup in tow.
A “slip” of her wrist sent the pink yogurt splashing perfectly across Wanda’s expensive dress.
“My dress!” Wanda shrieked, stumbling back. Her heel caught in the carpet, pitching her into the trash bin with a graceless crash.
