Chapter 21
Chapter 21:
Yeah, maybe I like my shy a little too much.
Days after the call that seemed to shake Oscar, my pale, bashful man had been acting a bit off. He’d be distant one moment, then intimate the next. I tried not to let it affect me, but honestly, it was messing with my emotions. I was getting cranky, and even Robyn noticed, commenting on my gloomy mood.
“I’d say you need a vacation, boss. You’re ruining my vibe,” she pointed out the moment I huffed and slumped back in my chair after a long technical meeting with the legal and marketing departments.
And this was why Robyn had been such an asset to me. She always came up with the best ideas. I smiled, telling her to give me options and dates from my planner while I floated the idea by Oscar.
“I need to get out of the office. I’m thinking of joining cousin Zal. Why don’t you connect my call with him? Then you can get to work on my vacation plans while I grab a beer with Zal. I’m sure you’re already itching to get me out of here,” I said, laughing when her face lit up, tapping her tablet to connect the call.
I was lucky that years ago, Dad had roped Zal into working by my side. Zal, my cousin on my mother’s side, had always been more like a brother. He’d become an orphan as a toddler and had been living with us ever since. Dad loved him from the day he came to stay, and even though he was family, Zal had always made sure I remembered his role in my life. Losing both his parents at such a young age had shaped him into who he was.
These past few weeks, after my own parents’ disappearance, I’d come to understand him a lot more.
Later that evening, after a relaxing afternoon with Zal, I still hadn’t heard from Oscar. He was ignoring me. Or maybe he was just busy, and I was overthinking it, being too sensitive.
“I still say you should take a date with you. It’ll look better.
That Brioni tux will shine with a gold-digging woman on your arm,” Robyn reminded me from the other end of the line as I looked at myself in the mirror. She was giving me last-minute instructions before I headed out to the town’s biggest fundraising gala for the children’s hospital’s newest wing.
“I’m not in the mood for small talk.

This is just me showing my face, writing a big fat check, kissing the mayor’s ass, and playing nice with people I don’t want anywhere near my side of the business,” I replied, running my hand over my tuxedo before leaving the apartment.
“Ugh, you’re just being a bratty boss. I know you’re trying to avoid a certain Davenport, and you didn’t want to hurt his feelings by bringing a date, right p>
“Maybe,” I grumbled, knowing it was easier to admit the truth to the inquisitive Robyn than lie.
“Right, so, remember those dates? Make sure you pin down your man and schedule your steamy getaway.
The place is secluded, and you know I only have the best intentions for my favorite boss p>
I chuckled, replying, “I’m your only boss p>
“I know.
That’s why you’re my favorite. And I want you to be happy. You know, happy boss equals happy Robyn,” she smugly stated, and I let out another laugh. Perfect. She knew just how to lift my mood.
Less than an hour later, I was mingling with half-balding men and their over-accessorized wives. It was getting harder for me to concentrate on their conversation the moment Oscar Davenport entered the room. He looked stunning—tall, effortlessly handsome.
The man had a date on his arm, probably a model given how the designer dress clung to her body.
