“Hey,” I announced my presence, and he smiled, looking freshly showered. But then Zal tilted his head when his eyes darted to my neck. I should’ve worn the button-up shirt, I thought, as he huffed before closing his laptop.

“Thank you,” I said, sitting in the same spot I had last night.
This morning, I got a better look at him. He was nice enough to take care of me—maybe because he was under Ghazi’s instruction. Maybe I should stop overthinking things. Ghazi probably had told him to do it.
“Has Ghazi mentioned anything?” I asked when he handed me my coffee.
He looked at me for a moment before shaking his head.
Then he sauntered back to the kitchen counter to plate our breakfast.
“I checked in with him via text or email. I don’t usually call him in the morning. Do you want to call him p>
“N-no… he knows my number. I just… maybe he’s busy.” I didn’t want to sound pathetic, but I knew he heard me. I felt like a stupid loser running back to my ex. I could call Ghazi—I had thought about it since yesterday—but I was too embarrassed. I thought he’d call me first, at least ask how I was. But when he didn’t, I felt foolish for not making the first move. I was sure he had someone new in his bed by now. I should be grateful that Zal hadn’t taken me to Ghazi’s, but maybe Zal already knew better than to do that.
“He is. Don’t worry about Ghazi. I’ll make sure he calls you if you want p>
“No… no. It’s okay,” I said before sipping my coffee, then silently continuing to eat my breakfast. Zal fussed over me taking my medication after we finished our meals.
Then he got up, telling me he was going to check the perimeter.
“I thought we were safe here p>
“You can never be too safe,” he replied almost instantly.
Then he cursed under his breath and put his finger to his lips, silently signaling for me to be quiet. He showed me his phone—there was a silent alarm triggered. I didn’t understand where it was coming from, but I nodded anyway, my brain too frazzled to process it properly.

“My room, lock yourself in the bathroom.
There’s a gun under the sink. Do not open the door until I tell you. Understand p>
“And you?” My hand instinctively reached for his arm, suddenly needing him to be safe. Hell, maybe we could both hunker down in the bathroom together.
“I’ll be okay. Go, now!” he said, half-whispering, urging me to move while he pulled a gun from under the dining table. My eyes widened at how easily he handled the deadly weapon. My legs felt shaky, but I followed his instructions.
I stumbled once when I reached his room, managing to get up half-crawling before locking the door behind me once I made it into the bathroom. It was smaller than the master bathroom, and my hand reached under the sink to find the gun. It was heavy. My mind raced—how long was I supposed to hide, and would Zal be okay? Then, I heard gunshots.
Oh, fuck! Oh, shit! What was I supposed to do? Zal had specifically told me to stay inside, but I wanted to go out there and what? Save him? I had a gun, right? I could shoot someone, right?
But then I heard shouting. It was Dion’s voice. How the hell did he find me? My mind froze as there was a loud banging at the door.
“It’s me! It’s safe, but we need to go. Now!” It was Zal’s voice, and I wasn’t sure what I was going to see when I opened the bathroom door.
