Chapter 680
She didn’t feel anything for Andrew Lane anymore.
No longing, no affection.
And marriage? That was out of the question.
All those bizarre dreams Tristan Davis kept having—well, to Emily Blair, they were nothing short of a joke.
Her voice was calm and even. “I haven’t been involved with him for ages, so there’s nothing for me to feel.”
Tristan stared stubbornly at the back of her head. “At least turn around when you’re talking to me. Don’t talk to me with your back turned.”
With a sigh, Emily glanced at the driver up front, still focused on the road, then turned to face Tristan, her tone sharp. “Did you hit your head or something? Why are you asking such stupid questions?”
She could see in the rearview mirror that the driver was staring dead ahead, not daring to move his gaze an inch.
He’d definitely heard her.
Whenever Emily lost her temper, Tristan was at a complete loss. He edged closer, whining, “You have no idea how mean you were to me in my dream.”
In the dream, he’d flown into a rage, determined to carry Emily off, fighting his way through a crowd of wedding guests just to get to her. But when he finally reached her, Emily and Andrew Lane had teamed up to take him down.
That’s what woke him up-furious.
Now Tristan was gripping Emily’s arms with both hands. “I just came for a little comfort. You don’t have to bite my head off.”
Emily shot him a look that was hard to decipher. “Then maybe you should go back to sleep and sort things out with dream-me.”
“Not a chance,” Tristan retorted immediately.
She pried his hands off. “Would you be quiet for once?”
Work was as hectic as ever, and at six o’clock sharp, Emily clocked out and headed with Tristan to the hospital where Elizabeth Wilson’s grandmother was staying.
In the past couple of days, her grandmother’s condition had improved a lot-she could finally eat on her own again.
Far from being shaken by her brush with death, her grandmother looked perfectly relaxed, propped up against the pillows. “Emily, has Elizabeth come back yet?”
Emily tucked the blanket around her and checked the time. “She’s been swamped. She was planning on coming a couple days ago, but since you’ve been doing so much better and she really can’t get away right now, she hasn’t made it. Don’t blame her, okay?”
Her grandmother just beamed. “Of course not. Tell her to focus on her work. I’m fine here.”
Emily smiled. “She finished everything today. Her flight’s just a couple of hours after Tristan’s-she’ll be here to see you soon.”
Her grandmother nodded eagerly.
They chatted for a bit until the doctors came by on their rounds.
This time, the attending physician was the department head, with Alex White trailing behind him.
Emily raised an eyebrow and stepped aside with Tristan to make way for the doctors.
Alex never once looked her way, focused entirely on discussing her grandmother’s case with the head physician.
“Alex White?”
Emily turned at the sound of her name. Tristan was looking at her with a lazy expression. “We used to be neighbors for a few years. Haven’t seen him in ages.”
“I see,” Emily replied.
Tristan gave her a look she couldn’t quite read. “So? You finding yourself a new guy while I’m not around? One Andrew Lane wasn’t enough, now you want Alex White too?”
He looked genuinely upset.
Emily’s mouth twitched. “Can you stop with the ridiculous jealousy, please?”
Tristan pressed his lips together and glared at her.
Once the doctors finished their discussion, Emily stepped forward. “Is there anything we should pay special attention to?”
The department head was a kindly-looking man with black-framed glasses and an
earnest smile. “She’s doing much better now. Just keep following the same
precautions as before-plenty of rest, light meals
Emily nodded, sneaking a glance at Alex White.
