Chapter 846

Steven Davis’s voice was heavy. “Even though you won’t say it, I can guess what kind of job you’re doing these days.”
“You should also know your mother and I will be heading overseas soon for work at the other branch. I’m not getting any younger, and I can’t run the company forever. It’s time for someone to take over,” Steven said, his tone firm. “How much longer do you plan on staying out there?”
Tristan lowered his gaze, raising an eyebrow. “So that’s it you want me to come back and inherit the family business?”
Steven let out a deep grunt. “You’ve done well for yourself out there. That’s why I let you chase your own path for so long, without forcing you home. But it’s time you understood how things stand here. You’re our only son. This responsibility falls to you. If you can quit your job, do it. It’s time to start learning the ropes at the company, so you’re ready to take over before I retire.”
Tristan replied directly, “If you can guess what I’m doing now, then you must also know I can’t just walk away from my work whenever I want.”
“Even if you can’t quit right now, you need to start getting ready,” Steven insisted. “Since you’re not too busy at the moment, come to the company and start getting a feel for things.”
Tristan didn’t protest.
He’d been born into the Davis family and had enjoyed more than twenty years of privilege. It was only fair that he should shoulder some responsibility in return.
He was the only child. There was no one else to step up.
In fact, Tristan had prepared for this. Before he started his government job, he’d already reported to his superiors. After this project wrapped up, he’d be free to leave.
“That’s fine. But ”
Tristan gave a slight smile. “Aside from the company, is there anything else I should know about?”
His question carried a hint of something more.
Mr. and Mrs. Davis exchanged a glance. Mrs. Davis hesitated, then said, “About
what happened at lunch—you ended up making Cynthia cry, and her parents were upset too. Could you go and have a proper talk with her?”
Tristan didn’t hesitate. “You want me to apologize?”
Mrs. Davis eyed him, gauging his reaction. “If you could
“Fine.”
Tristan’s answer was concise.
But he had a condition. “I’ll apologize, but I’m not doing any blind dates.”
Steven barked, “Watch your attitude, young man!”
Mrs. Davis jumped in to smooth things over. “Of course not-it’s not a blind date.
We just want you to talk things through with Cynthia.”
Tristan raised an eyebrow, nodding. “That’s fine, but—”
“What now?” Steven’s tone was impatient.
Tristan crossed his legs and gave a lazy grin. “I’ve already told you, I’m interested in someone. I’m pursuing her. If you set up more blind dates, I’m not going. And if some poor girl gets stood up, that won’t be my fault.”
Steven’s face darkened even more.
Tristan added, “Consider that my official disclaimer.”
Mr. and Mrs. Davis exchanged another look. “If you’ve found someone you like, we’re happy for you-and of course we’ll support your decision. But we’d like to know what she’s like. Can you bring her home to meet us sometime?”
“That’s not a good idea.”
Tristan’s expression turned serious. “I haven’t won her over yet. I don’t want to scare her off by moving too fast.”
Seeing how earnest he was, Mrs. Davis was caught a little off guard, then smiled. “Do you really like this girl that much?”
“I do.”
A gentle warmth flickered in Tristan’s eyes as he smiled, as if recalling a cherished memory.
Mrs. Davis grew even more curious about the mystery girl.
Tristan had always been handsome, from middle school through college, and plenty of girls had tried to catch his eye-some of them not only beautiful, but outstanding in their own right. Yet he’d never shown interest in any of them, remaining single all these years.
