Chapter 1459
Chapter 1458:
Meanwhile, Elliana studied the tense tableau, shifting her gaze between Hailee — head still bowed — and Merlin, who appeared perfectly composed, before retreating into her own thoughts.
Beside her, Adah’s fury showed no sign of abating, and she continued her assault on the man. “Hailee is small and delicate. You, on the other hand, are huge and muscular. Are you seriously trying to say she assaulted you? You went too far with her and now you’re twisting the story! The audacity p>
In response, Merlin gestured to the marks covering his skin and challenged Adah with a question. “If I were as ruthless as you think, would I really be standing here covered in scratches like these p>
The woman was left without words — his argument made sense. He could have easily defended himself against Hailee. Allowing her to inflict those wounds didn’t fit with his character at all.
Merlin didn’t stop there. “I’ve always been this way. When I’m sober, I’m as fierce as a tiger, but after I’ve been drinking, I become harmless. Cole and Allan can confirm it p>
Immediately, Elliana and Adah shot threatening looks at both men, warning them not to dare lie.
“He’s telling the truth,” Cole said honestly.
Allan confirmed it without hesitation. “That’s right. I swear p>
Turning his attention to Hailee, Merlin adopted a direct tone. “Hailee is another story entirely. When she’s drunk, she loses all inhibition. She becomes bold and surprisingly strong. She didn’t just take advantage of me — she left me covered in wounds. Don’t I deserve an explanation p>
This revelation caught Elliana and Adah completely off guard. Was the kind, soft-spoken Hailee they knew truly capable of something like this? Instantly, both women turned toward the young woman, searching her eyes for answers.
Hailee didn’t dare meet their gaze. She curled in on herself as though hoping to disappear.
That was all the answer they needed.
Elliana and Adah exchanged glances and released a sigh. It was hard to believe that the sweet, modest Hailee had done something so outrageous.

Suddenly, the entire situation made sense. The young woman’s earlier anguish had nothing to do with Merlin attacking her. She was in shock because, as his secretary, she had assaulted her own boss, and now she had no idea how to fix it.
Out of nowhere, Adah let out a short laugh. “I haven’t slept a wink all night. I’m going upstairs to rest p>
Without waiting for a response, she turned and left the room.
Allan looked at Merlin with amusement and decided to follow her.
After Adah and Allan left, Elliana placed a hand on the young woman’s shoulder and spoke. “You got yourself into this, Hailee. Now you have to deal with the consequences. This time, I can’t save you.” With that, she stood and headed toward the stairs as well.
Moments earlier, both she and Adah had been ready to unleash their fury on Merlin, convinced he had assaulted Hailee. But once they realized the truth wasn’t what they had imagined, they understood that continuing to defend her would only make them look irrational. Stepping away seemed like the best option.
Cole smiled, gave Merlin a friendly pat on the shoulder, and then followed Elliana upstairs.
In the end, only Merlin and Hailee remained in the living room.
