Another Private Encounter with Him
An Ruo had to admit, Han Xiaofen was a very intelligent woman, at least the most adept at gauging limits she had ever met.
She answered her, “There wasn’t really a reason. The Young Master didn’t want to eat, so he asked me to make him some porridge. Later, the Young Master felt for how hard I worked and only then asked me to join them for the meal.”
Han Xiaofen asked curiously, “The Young Master likes the porridge you make? Have you made porridge for him before?”
“Yes, one night the Young Master was hungry, and everyone happened to be asleep while I was not, so I made him some porridge.” An Ruo replied truthfully.
Han Xiaofen smiled again, a smile that was hard to read.
“The Young Master is like that. If someone is good to him, he always wants to repay the favor, not wanting to owe anyone anything. Sister An, you carry on with your work, I’ll go and do mine too.”
She got up and walked a couple of steps before turning back to ask, “By the way, Sister An, are you married? I’ve never heard you talk about yourself.”
An Ruo looked at her calmly. Perhaps it was the sunlight that was a bit dazzling, making even Han Xiaofen’s smile seem a bit glaring.
“I am married,” she said lightly.
The young girl smiled even brighter, “I guessed you were married. Sister An, you must be very in love with your husband. Do you have children?”
An Ruo sighed inwardly, thinking why someone so young would be so cunning. Wouldn’t it be better if they were just simple at that age?
“I had a child before, but my current husband and I don’t have any children,” An Ruo said ambiguously, which was both the truth and misleading.
“I see. Sister An, I wish you happiness then.” Han Xiaofen gave an innocent smile and left.
An Ruo withdrew her gaze and continued working. She understood her meaning and was unafraid of telling her the truth. She wanted to tell her the truth, to dispel Tang Yuchen’s suspicions about her.
After working in the garden for a day, it was only when night fell that An Ruo changed out of her work clothes and planned to go back to her room to shower and sleep. The living room was brightly lit, and usually, at this time, the servants had not yet retired.
An Ruo walked into the living room and saw Tang Yuchen sitting alone on the sofa drinking. Besides him, no one else was there.
As soon as she set foot inside, she wanted to turn and leave. How was it that she ran into him alone again?
“Stop.” Tang Yuchen called out to her, turning his head, his dark eyes meeting her flickering ones.
“Young Master… you’re not resting yet?” An Ruo stood where she was, quietly asking. In front of him, she always behaved submissively, as that was the only way to reflect the master-servant dynamic.
Tang Yuchen put down his glass and stood, slowly approaching her. With every step he took, her heart beat faster, and by the time she sensed the faint scent of wine from him, her heart was already out of rhythm.
“Young Master, is there something you need?” An Ruo asked him calmly on the surface.
Tang Yuchen stopped half a step away from her, looking at her with a slight frown, “Am I that scary?”
An Ruo was momentarily taken aback, then shook her head.
“If I’m not scary, then why do you always seem like you want to run away whenever you see me?”
“I do not.”
The man slightly curled his lips, showing a faint hint of mockery, “Really?”
He slightly lowered his head, drawing near to her at close quarters, his dark, deep eyes peering into hers as he spoke softly, “See, you’re thinking of turning around and running away right now.”
She did want to escape, not because she feared him, but because she didn’t dare to face him alone.
