Chapter 18
“You’re not the only one that gets to see my beautiful mate. I’m not here for you, I’m here for mate. Also, you can’t block me out, I’m a part of you, stupid”, he said and i was about to retort when I heard mom’s voice.
“Oh Adrian, you’re here. I thought you won’t come down for dinner”, she said with an emotion I can’t describe in her eyes, almost like she was mad at me but did not want to lash out at me.
“You spent a lot of time preparing the food, Mom, I wouldn’t waste your effort like that. And besides, you make the best food and I won’t ever miss that”, I smiled at her and she smiled back a little.
“I’m not the only one, Lola here is a natural in the kitchen and without her, I wouldn’t have finished so soon”, she said to me, daring me to ignore Lola with the expression on her face.
“I see, thank you Lola”, I said to her and felt electricity run through me when she looked up at me and smiled a little.
I ignored the feeling running through me and sat down beside Dad. We discussed some pack issues until they finished setting the table. I noticed that she set the table for three but said nothing about it.
Mom carried the food to the table and noticed that Lola set the table for three people and asked her about it.
“Lola, child, why did you set the table for three when there are four people in this room at the moment?”Mom asked her and I sat up, curious to know why she did that.
“I did not know I was supposed to set a table for myself too. I’m just a maid and it’s not right to eat with high ranking wolves, it’s considered rude”, she said with a shaky voice, as if she was going to burst into tears at that moment.
I wanted to pull her close and comfort her but sat still in my chair, unmoving. I hoped my face did not show how much my heart broke for her. I wondered who hurt her like that.
“Oh, Lola. We toiled in the kitchen together and you thought it was okay for you not to eat out of the food? That’s not right and I command you to sit while I get your plate and cutlery, we are having dinner together and I don’t want any objections”, Mom said and turned to pick her plates and cutlery.
I noticed her trying to rein in her tears and wanted to know what really happened to her. Why does she look so weak and broken? How did she become a rogue? I wanted answers to this but I couldn’t ask because I do not consider her my mate.
Mom brought her plate and set the table before dishing out food for us all. I noticed she only ate a small quantity of her food and just pushed the remaining around the plate. Mom and Dad did not seem to notice though as they talked and filled each other in on how their respective day went.
I finished my food and was about to leave my room when Nathan mindlinked me.
“Hey man. The next Alpha and Beta from Moonlit pack are here. The Alpha claims we have something that belongs to him. You should probably get down here and talk to them before I throw them out of the pack”, Nathan said, sounding angry and I knew I had to go there right away. Nathan rarely gets angry. 1
“Dad, I have to reach the pack house real quick. Nathan said the next Alpha and Beta of Moonlit pack are on the pack lands and they said I have something that belongs to them. Nathan sounds angry and that’s rare, those guys are clearly a bother”, I said to Dad and heard a gasp and spoon clanking with plates from where Lola was sitting.
I looked over to her and she looked as pale as a sheet of paper.
