It had been over four months since he discovered Gabriela was his flesh and blood.
Suddenly, the strength seemed to drain from his hand, now hanging limply at his side like a wilted flower. The prominent blue veins on his skin faintly revealed the rhythmic pulse of his beating heart.
“The reason I kept the truth from you is because there were too many eyes on us. If anything had happened to you, it could have jeopardized our daughter’s safety. It wasn’t that I thought you were incompetent. I just couldn’t bear to take that risk.”
Eileen moved closer to him, her fingers firmly gripping his wrist. “I wouldn’t risk Gabriela’s life. I don’t want her to grow up without a father figure. That’s why I’m telling you about her now. However, we still need to keep her existence hidden from the outside world.”

Eileen’s heart melted. She clutched his shirt tightly and then wrapped her arms around his sturdy waist.
She gave Bryan the space he needed to gather his thoughts. Once they had both calmed down, Bryan went to her room and lay down beside Gabriela, though sleep was a distant dream for him that night.
Eileen, sleepless as well, positioned Gabriela between them, with Bryan and herself on either side, safeguarding their child together.
In the soft glow of the nightlight, Gabriela’s skin was smooth and delicate. Her curly lashes were thick and long, her arms looked chubby and cute. Eileen’s eyes were fixed on the baby.
“Josue said that you don’t care for Gabriela,” Eileen said suddenly, just before dawn.
Bryan sat up abruptly, his voice firm. “That’s ridiculous. There’s no way I wouldn’t love my daughter. He’s just jealous and trying to stir things up!”
