Ruby’s smile faltered upon hearing this. Was this meeting about blessing the couple, or was it really about separating them?
Ruby looked at Eileen, who then stated firmly, “Mrs. Baker, Huey and Bailee have already gotten married. Weren’t you aware?”
“They’ve already gotten married?” Winona’s eyes widened before she shook her head in disbelief. “That can’t be. They wouldn’t do it behind my back. Huey, though headstrong, wouldn’t dare make such a move. If he really did, why would he agree to meet his childhood fiancée?”
“He agreed to that meeting?” Ruby looked dismayed.
“Yes, they’re supposed to meet tomorrow night. He had an argument with me about Bailee and moved out, but family ties aren’t so easily severed.”
Winona mentioned that Huey had managed some of the advanced equipment at the Baker family resort. Sometimes when something went wrong, she would ask someone to call Huey. Despite their disagreement, they had met a few times to discuss operational issues, easing the tension slightly. However, Huey had never mentioned marriage, so Winona was skeptical.
“Mrs. Baker, there seems to be a misunderstanding. Bailee and Huey are legally married. At this point, it’s inappropriate for you to arrange meetings with his childhood fiancée. It would be better to clear this up with that girl sooner rather than later,” Eileen said, feeling compelled to make sure Winona understood the gravity of the situation.
Seeing how serious Ruby and Eileen were, Winona couldn’t afford to be careless and quickly called Huey. “Did you marry Bailee?”
“No,” Huey replied, the clicking of his keyboard and mouse audible as he trained for a friendly match.

“Don’t lie to me, you little brat. If you’ve gone behind my back, we need to sort this out!” Winona yelled over the phone.
Huey quickly assured her, “I would never do such a thing without your blessing. Hey, watch out, there’s someone in the bushes, pull back!”
The clattering of the keyboard and mouse grew louder, heightening Winona’s frustration. She ended the call abruptly.
The conversation lingered in the living room, visibly upsetting Ruby.
“You see, he wouldn’t lie to me,” Winona said. “Ruby, I don’t want their situation to damage our relationship. Since Huey has a childhood fiancée…”
Winona tried to clarify further, but Ruby interjected. “You make decisions for your son, and I’ll make them for my daughter. Let’s continue this conversation over the phone later.”
This was Ruby’s polite way of suggesting that it was time for Winona to leave.
