Looking back at Bryan, who hadn’t walked far, Josue sighed deeply and explained, “We discussed his condition with his doctor, wondering if seeing familiar faces would help him. But the doctor warned that it could worsen his condition, possibly causing him to reject treatment altogether. That’s why we didn’t tell you before.”
Eileen’s mind raced, sensing that the situation was more complicated than it appeared, but she couldn’t quite make sense of it yet.
Her gaze shifted to Bryan, and her throat tightened as tears began to fall. “His legs…”
“It seems to be a result of his fall,” Josue replied softly. “The doctor believes he’s fortunate he’s not paralyzed. For now, his legs can only be treated gradually.”
Eileen nodded, her face a mix of understanding and sorrow. “I understand. You can leave now. I want to see him.”
Josue reached out his arm to stop Eileen. “His condition is not stable right now. It’s best if you don’t disturb him.”
“Josue,” Eileen’s voice was soft but carried an undeniable authority. “If you stop me again, we will not be friends anymore.”
Josue wanted to protest, but Jacob gently pulled him aside and said, “Give them some time.”
Eileen moved closer to Bryan, each step slow and careful. Josue sighed, watching her approach, his eyes reddening with emotion.
Following at a distance, Eileen didn’t dare interrupt him. She watched silently as his once steady legs betrayed him, his movements awkward and jerky. The contrast between this fragile man and the confident Bryan she remembered was striking.
But there was no room for mockery in Eileen’s heart. She was grateful for every scar. They were proof that he was still alive.
After nearly an hour, Bryan returned to his ward, with Eileen quietly trailing behind.
Sensing her presence, Bryan glanced back.
His expression was cold, and his eyes held no warmth. With a fleeting glance at Eileen, he sat on the bed, closing his eyes to rest.
Eileen had shared countless moments with Bryan, yet she had never felt so lost for words.
She approached slowly, forcing a smile that she didn’t realize looked awkward.
“I saw the video of you searching for your family. I want to help. What do you remember? Can you tell me?” she asked, her voice trembling.
But Bryan didn’t respond. He didn’t even look at her.
He simply lay there, exhausted from the effort earlier, slipping into sleep.
Eileen didn’t disturb him. She stood silently, watching his profile.
Memories of their time together flooded her mind—sweet, sorrowful, painful, joyful… All of it merged into a single emotion: relief that he was alive.
As long as he was alive, there was hope.
