Eileen stood in the ward the entire afternoon, the hours slipping by unnoticed.
The bright midday sun slowly turned into the soft hues of sunset.
Bryan remained motionless, as if truly asleep.
“It’s getting late, Eileen. You should go back and rest.” Josue finally spoke, his voice carrying a gentle urgency. “Even if you don’t trust me, think about your own health. Besides, you’ve found him. He isn’t going anywhere.”
Eileen wasn’t worried about him going anywhere. She had more pressing matters to attend to.
With a reluctant glance back at Bryan, Eileen finally turned and left the ward.
As the door clicked shut, Bryan, who had been still all afternoon, slowly opened his eyes. Despair flickered in his gaze. He tried to lift himself to catch one last glimpse of Eileen’s retreating figure, but his arms betrayed him, and he collapsed back onto the bed.
Staring at his unresponsive arms, he fought to hold back his rising emotions.
After a long pause, he managed to pick up his phone, dialing a number with great difficulty. “Arrange for my discharge.”
His voice, once captivating, now sounded slow and hoarse.
After returning to the hotel, Eileen had a simple meal before making a phone call.
“Raymond, contact the top doctors in every field and have them come to Bayside City immediately. I need them to conduct a thorough examination of Bryan,” Eileen said, her tone firm.
“Have you found Mr. Dawson?” Raymond’s voice brimmed with excitement, a relief to Eileen. At least she could trust that Raymond wasn’t part of Josue and Jacob’s plan to hide the truth about Bryan’s whereabouts.
If Raymond had been involved, Eileen wouldn’t have known whom to trust anymore.
“Yes, I’ve found him. But he’s not in good shape. Please arrange for the doctors to get here as soon as possible,” Eileen replied.
After hanging up, Josue’s voice came immediately. “The medical technology at Bayside Hospital is top-notch. We’ve already arranged a full examination for Bryan.”
“I don’t trust you anymore.” Eileen’s voice was calm but sharp, her eyes hardening.
Josue instinctively opened his mouth to explain, but Eileen waved him off. “I told you, I don’t have the energy to question why you lied to me. But you did lie. Now, I can’t be sure if anything you’ve told me is true. I need to find out for myself.”
Deep down, she knew neither Josue nor Jacob would betray Bryan. But as for why they had kept secrets from her, she didn’t want to think about it, nor did she have the strength to do so.
During the three months Bryan had been missing, she had repeatedly replayed the events of his time in Linder Land in her mind.
But no matter how many times she thought about it, she couldn’t pinpoint the reason.
