Bryan had scheduled his physical examination for the last day, fully aware of what it entailed.
The following morning, Bryan handed the puppet to Jacob and then made his way to the examination area. Eileen watched as Bryan staggered towards them. It took him over ten minutes to cover just a few hundred meters.
Noticing his legs were slightly stiff, Eileen whispered something to the doctor.
“Those with mobility issues due to leg problems or age should be examined first,” the doctor then announced to the crowd.
Someone immediately cleared a path. Bryan looked up and caught Eileen’s gaze from behind dozens of people. He quickly looked away and continued forward.
Suddenly, Bryan felt a tug at his trousers. Looking down, he saw Gabriela.
Gabriela was sitting in her baby walker, looking up at him. Seeing Bryan look down, she babbled happily with a bright smile.
Even after three months, Gabriela still recognized him.
Bryan gripped his cane tighter and gazed at the little girl he had missed so much.
Bryan’s expression turned serious, and his brow furrowed. He sensed Eileen watching him. He should have walked away decisively, but he didn’t want to.
“Whose child is this?” Zelda hurried over, pulling Gabriela’s little hand away. “Go find your parents; don’t bother us.”
Perhaps because Gabriela had never met Zelda, or perhaps due to Zelda’s harsh tone, Gabriela became anxious. Her face flushed, and she turned to look at Eileen.
Her big black eyes began to well up with tears, her lips quivering as if to say, “Mom, someone is being mean to me. Help.”
Eileen stood and walked toward them. Seeing Zelda holding Bryan’s arm, she quickly lowered her gaze and took Gabriela away. “Gabriela, let’s go and play here.”
The doctor led Bryan to an indoor bed for his examination, citing his mobility issues.
The doctor, a renowned psychologist, planned to hypnotize Bryan. “Later, just watch the clock…”
Outside, Zelda approached Eileen and said, “Do you really plan to stay here indefinitely? I’m going to marry Bryan. There’s no point in you staying here.”
“Is there any point in marrying a man who has lost his memory?” Eileen responded calmly, trying to reason with Zelda. “You want to marry him because you’re missing an arm and you’re afraid no one will take care of you when you get older, aren’t you? What if I offer you enough money?”
“I’m not as shallow as you think,” Zelda said, giving a dismissive snort. “I wasn’t truthful before. I actually want to marry him because I love him.”
Love?
Eileen couldn’t help but laugh. “Do you have any standards for love? Do you truly love a married man who’s already a father?”
She pointed to Gabriela, who was holding a water bottle, and continued, “This is his daughter. She needs her father as she grows up. Doesn’t that matter to you?”
“People get divorced all the time. It’s not like they can’t move on afterward,” Zelda replied. “Don’t try to intimidate me with legalities. You and Bryan don’t have the law on your side! If you truly care about the child, take her and leave now. That way, you won’t have to watch us get married and feel upset.”
