With that, Zelda turned and walked away.
Biting her lip, Eileen watched Zelda’s retreating figure. Then, she sat down and played with Gabriela as if nothing had happened. She refused to give up now. There were still a few days left until the wedding. She was waiting to hear what the doctor would say.
Half an hour later, the doctor emerged from the room, accompanied by Bryan and Josue. No one knew when Josue had entered the room.
Noticing Eileen’s gaze, Josue sullenly put his hands in his pockets and retreated to a corner.
The doctor handed off the remaining paperwork to his assistant and approached Eileen to report.
“Mr. Dawson’s situation is quite complex,” the doctor said. “I’m aware of the news stories about you and Mr. Dawson. He treated you as if you were his life, and he nearly lost his child before. He appears normal, but he’s actually quite on edge. He even made plans to capture Coen before. Given these circumstances, it’s understandable that he’s very cautious.”
After a pause, he continued, “Additionally, his memory loss makes him even more fearful and suspicious of unfamiliar things. Therefore, taking a forceful approach to remove him is not advisable.”
Hearing this, Eileen felt her hope fade.
“Then… how is he doing? Are his injuries severe? Can he recover?” Eileen asked. Seeing Bryan move so slowly, like someone with a disability, she felt a profound sadness.
“Well…” The doctor glanced towards Josue, who subtly signaled him. The doctor quickly replied, “If he had received proper treatment from the start, he might be in better shape now. But after being injured for so long, it’s difficult for him to fully recover and return to normal.”
“I understand. Carry on with your work,” Eileen said before turning to sit on the stairs, her fists tightly clenched.
Bryan stood a few steps away, waiting for Zelda. His gaze remained fixed on her the entire time.
In the past, Eileen had been the recipient of such a gaze from him. Now, another woman had taken her place, and Bryan’s attention was directed at Zelda, right in front of her.
“Mommy!” Gabriela ran over excitedly, clutching something in her hand.
Eileen took the object from Gabriela’s hand and noticed it was a small puppet. It was smoothly polished and made of wood.
“Where did you get this?” Eileen asked.
Jacob approached and explained, “I gave it to her. A craftsperson in the village makes them, so I got one for her.”
“Did you hear what the doctor just said?” As Jacob approached, Josue walked over to Eileen and asked, “What are you planning to do? Are you going to stay and watch Bryan’s wedding, or will you leave?”
The question made the light fade from Eileen’s eyes. “How long until they’re married?” she asked.
