In the small village, street lamps were spaced every few hundred meters, casting faint light on the uneven ground. Carrying Gabriela made Eileen’s walk particularly challenging, and Benjamin instinctively moved to assist her.
“No, thanks,” Eileen said, avoiding Benjamin’s outstretched hand.
“What?” Benjamin asked, his voice laced with a chuckle. “You don’t want my help after all the acting?”
Hearing this, Eileen was taken aback. She turned around to face Benjamin. Under the glow of the streetlamp, several insects buzzed overhead.
“You can’t deceive me. We’ve known each other for so long. I can see through you easily,” Eileen said, her tone more serious now.
Benjamin took a deep breath. “Is there anything I can do to help?”
As he spoke, he noticed Josue and Jacob approaching.
In a hushed tone, he added, “To be frank, those two are close with Bryan. They’ll always prioritize him. You need someone who is on your side, no matter what. Trust me, I’m that person.”
He emphasized the last two words deliberately.
There was sincerity in his eyes. For a moment, Eileen couldn’t help but marvel at how Benjamin, once her rival, had become a close friend.
“Then, thank you,” Eileen said, handing Gabriela to Benjamin just as Jacob and Josue caught up with them.
Josue instinctively reached out to take Gabriela from Benjamin. “I can take her.”
Before Benjamin could respond, Eileen interjected, “Let Benjamin hold her. He needs to get familiar with Gabriela in advance.”
What? In advance?
Josue’s eyes widened, exchanging glances with Jacob.
By then, Benjamin had already lifted Gabriela onto his shoulder, holding her high in the air, causing her to giggle.
“What do you mean?” Jacob asked, unable to resist. “Does Benjamin want to be Gabriela’s godfather?”
With a knowing smile, Eileen glanced at Benjamin and Gabriela. “Not a godfather. He’s going to be Gabriela’s stepfather,” she said softly. “He’s been in love with me for many years. Didn’t Bryan mention that to you before?”
Both Jacob and Josue gasped.
“But I haven’t made up my mind yet. Let’s see how he does first. You two can help me keep an eye on him,” Eileen said, continuing to walk.
The sound of rapid footsteps echoed behind her. Josue hurried to catch up, his voice tinged with concern. “You… Have you really moved on from Bryan? Can you forget all the good he did for you?”
Gesturing toward the lavish wedding decorations, Eileen said, “Bryan has been as cruel to me as he was once kind. Now, he’s marrying another woman right before my eyes. Why shouldn’t I move on? I won’t wait for him to hurt me any longer.”
