Bryan gently brushed the tips of Eileen’s hair with his fingertips. His peripheral nerves were failing him, making it difficult to feel the strands, but he seemed to sense them and continued his gentle touch.
As time passed, Bryan shifted slightly to plant a soft kiss on Eileen’s head.
“Don’t move,” Eileen murmured, her sleep disturbed by worries about Milford’s situation. She snuggled closer to Bryan’s neck, her warm breath tickling his ear.
Bryan felt restless, as if he couldn’t lie still any longer. Despite the numbness in his peripheral nerves, other parts of his body still held feeling, and he couldn’t ignore the need to move.
As Eileen sank deeper into sleep, Bryan gently withdrew his hand, got out of bed, grabbed his coat, and quietly left the ward.
Josue, who had arrived early in the morning, was surprised to see Bryan up so early. “Where are you headed at this hour?”
“Don’t go in,” Bryan stopped him, his tone firm. “Eileen is still asleep. I’m going to get her breakfast.”
“Eileen?” Josue was taken aback. Noticing the seriousness in Bryan’s eyes, he hesitated before pulling his hand back from the door.
Josue, realizing the situation, couldn’t help but complain. “Jacob and I have been looking after you here in the hospital, making sure you’re fed and comfortable in your bed. And what did you do? As soon as Eileen shows up, you surrender your bed to her and even go out to buy her breakfast!”
A mix of grievance and jealousy colored Josue’s words.
Bryan’s response was calm, yet certain. “I enjoy doing this. You wouldn’t understand—because you don’t have a wife.”
Josue, wounded by Bryan’s comment, clasped his chest with his hands and stared at Bryan with wide eyes as Bryan headed toward the hospital’s restaurant.

Soon after, Bryan returned with breakfast, but Eileen remained asleep.
Her bed still held Bryan’s scent, and she snuggled deeper into the quilt, enjoying a peaceful sleep. The soft sunlight filtered through the window, causing her to instinctively frown at the brightness.
But the next moment, the harsh light disappeared, and her expression softened as she slipped back into slumber.
Around ten o’clock in the morning, Eileen slowly woke up.
When she opened her eyes, she saw Bryan sitting beside her. The sunlight enveloped him, and he shielded her from the midday glare.
Eileen reached out, gently touching Bryan’s furrowed brow. “Did I oversleep? Milford—”
“Hold on!” Suddenly, Josue jumped up from the sofa, exclaiming, “I’m here, too!”
Eileen was slightly taken aback. She had intended to ask about Milford’s situation, but Josue seemed to have misinterpreted her actions, thinking she was about to take off her clothes.
“Raymond is still investigating the hotel owner to uncover any discrepancies. As for Denzel, we need to wait another two days.” Bryan ignored Josue and tenderly smoothed Eileen’s disheveled hair. He reassured her, “Don’t worry too much. Since Zola resorted to underhanded tactics to trap Milford, we can use unconventional methods to resolve this.”
It was clear that conventional approaches were insufficient for dealing with certain malevolent individuals.
Although revealing the truth about Milford’s incident was ideal, it was prudent to prepare an alternative plan.
