“Someone can say that easily, but I’ll be the one actually taking action. Ms. Curtis, I wonder if you’ll be more grateful to Bryan or to me,” Josue said with a hint of sarcasm.
Eileen propped herself up, gathering her long hair into a bun. She sat cross-legged on the bed and replied, “Let’s just deal with the matter at hand first.”
Bryan was already up, bringing Eileen breakfast. The ward had a microwave to heat the food.
Josue sighed, noticing Bryan’s attentive care for Eileen. “It seems someone prefers his wife over his friends. Eileen, Bryan got breakfast early and made sure not to wake you. He even asked me to be quiet and shielded you from the sunlight…”
After a pause, he continued, “And Bryan, why reach out to us only when you’re in trouble? You mentioned that if Eileen knew about it, she’d be upset. Don’t you think Jacob and I would feel the same?”
At this, Eileen looked over at Bryan.
Bryan had been rescued by the Dury family before, which had forced him to search for his own family. If he had failed to contact them, he would have been reported missing to the police and quickly discovered by Eileen. Therefore, reaching out to Jacob and Josue had been his only option.
“A true friend will always be there for me, regardless of the situation,” Bryan said.
He then handed Eileen the fork and slid the bowl of food toward her. “Eat this while it’s still warm.”
Bryan appeared indifferent to Josue’s evident jealousy. He was open to discussing this in front of Eileen. After all, there were no secrets between them now.
“You really are something!” Josue stood up from the sofa, visibly angry, and looked as though he was about to confront Bryan physically.
“What are you doing?” Eileen quickly reached out, shielding Bryan with her arm. “Bryan’s a patient. How can you treat him so harshly?”

Josue’s frustration intensified, and he snapped, “Who spent three months searching for him? Who nearly drove you to depression during that time? Don’t you know—”
“Can’t you understand the situation?” Eileen interrupted, her voice firm. “You always want to matter more to Bryan than I do, but that’s just not possible. And don’t forget, he didn’t tell me out of love for you. It’s wrong that you and Jacob kept this from me.”
“Sit down and keep your distance from him,” Eileen said, her tone unwavering.
Before Josue could respond, his phone rang. Realizing the tension was escalating, he answered the call. After a brief exchange, his expression shifted to one of shock. “What?” he exclaimed.
Milford had admitted his crime.
Ten minutes ago, he had confessed to everything. It was said that he had made a phone call before that. No one knew who he had been speaking to, but the officer on duty mentioned that the call lasted only thirteen seconds.
“How could he do that?” Eileen exclaimed, scrambling out of bed and nearly knocking over the food on the bedside table.
Josue’s phone rang again. “Calm down,” he said, trying to steady her. “The police mentioned that Milford had a message for you. They sent it as a voice note.”
He handed the phone to Eileen. The voice message was under ten seconds long.
“Eileen, you always said hard work pays off. I believe that, but I don’t want to waste my efforts. My name can’t be cleared. I give up.”
“He…” Josue, although he had never met Milford, had heard a lot about him from Jacob. He had great respect for Milford, who was known for his maturity and good character. Milford’s voice on the phone filled him with sympathy.
