“You two need to stop,” Phoebe interjected, gesturing toward Eileen. “Today should be about celebrating Bryan’s return. You two are the stars tonight. Maybe save some of your whispers for later?”
Josue nodded eagerly, clearly agreeing with Phoebe. “Since you can’t do anything tonight, better save the talking. Otherwise, you’ll have nothing left to talk about.”
Ruby and Rylie were entertaining the children in the living room, so the others spoke freely.
Eileen’s cheeks flushed, and she instinctively stepped behind Bryan.
“We never run out of things to talk about, unlike some who can’t even speak without bickering,” Bryan said, sitting up and protectively shielding Eileen. He added, “We’re also not like someone who wants to say something but never does.”
Jacob was clearly a henpecked husband. The so-called bickering was just Phoebe scolding him, but he didn’t seem to mind. In fact, he took pride in it.
Meanwhile, Josue clenched his teeth and muttered, “If I had a wife, I wouldn’t be stuck looking after you. Could you at least try to be appreciative?”
Jacob quickly added fuel to the fire. “See? He has no wife and doesn’t want to help you, while I have a wife and still want to help you—that’s real friendship.”
“Enough with the nonsense!” Josue shot up, furious, and lunged at Jacob. The two of them argued, moving from the dining room to the garden.
By the time they reached the garden, everyone had nearly finished eating, so they all got up and headed outside. Eileen stayed a few steps behind, walking with Bryan.
Once outside, Eileen and Bryan sat on a bench, watching the others. Gabriela, sitting on a play mat by the window, pulled herself up using the window sill. She tapped on the glass, babbling excitedly at the people outside. Ruby stayed close, ensuring Gabriela didn’t fall.
“Mind if I watch Gabriela for a while?” Rylie asked, handing Jacob’s son, Clyde Meyer, to Ruby. “This little boy is fun, too. You can take care of him for a bit.”

Rylie had always enjoyed spending time with Gabriela, and lately, with Eileen so busy, Rylie had missed taking care of her. Upon seeing Gabriela, she immediately wanted to hold her.
Ruby passed Gabriela to Rylie and switched her attention to Clyde.
“Maybe we should let Eileen and Bryan have another baby soon,” Rylie mused, thinking it would give her a chance to help raise one of the children.
“If you’re so fond of children, why not ask Josue to have one?” Ruby responded, her voice laced with reluctance. She didn’t want Eileen and Bryan to consider having another child right now. After all, Bryan’s health was still unstable, and she couldn’t bear the thought of Eileen taking care of two children alone.
Rylie felt a pang of hurt at Ruby’s words. Josue was still head over heels for Edna, despite having met countless other women. A few months ago, when Josue had reluctantly started dating, Bryan’s accident had happened, and Edna had returned. Since then, Josue had resumed his previous habits. How could Rylie realistically hope for grandchildren under such circumstances?
Lost in thought, Rylie didn’t notice the phone ringing in the dining room. She handed Gabriela back to Ruby and quickly hurried to answer it.
“It’s Josue’s phone. It must be important. I’ll answer it for him,” Rylie said.
Noticing it was an international call, Rylie hesitated briefly before picking up.
Before she could speak, Edna’s voice came through. “Josue, it’s me. I—”
Rylie quickly ended the call. “No wonder Josue’s been avoiding dates; it’s her calling him again.”
Muttering to herself, she placed the phone down, but it rang again almost immediately.
