“No!” Gabriela’s defiant little shout rang out again.
Bryan furrowed his brows as an idea sparked. He pulled his phone from his pocket and offered it to Gabriela.
“How about you play with Daddy’s phone, sweetie?” Without even glancing at it, Gabriela swatted the phone away. It landed on the bed and bounced dangerously close to the edge.
Normally, Gabriela loved playing with phones, but today was different. She shifted from standing on Eileen’s lap to sitting, clinging tightly to Eileen’s neck as if afraid someone would take her mommy away.
Ruby, unable to stand it anymore, stepped forward. “Gabriela, sweetheart, your Daddy and Mommy are getting married. Mommy’s not getting any younger, and this is something we have to do. Can you be a good girl and let this happen?”
Eileen raised an eyebrow. Could Gabriela even grasp that concept?
Eileen frowned and locked into the little girl’s soulful eyes, saying, “If Mommy and Daddy get married, we’ll all be together. You’ll have a home with both of us.”
She gently stroked Gabriela’s cheek. “If you don’t let Mommy get married, does that mean you don’t want Daddy?”
Gabriela turned to Bryan, her little face scrunched, pouting her lips.
Ruby dangled a piece of candy enticingly in front of Gabriela. “Look, sweetie, Grandma has a piece of candy for you.”
Gabriela’s eyes lit up. She reached for the candy and sat beside Eileen.
With Ruby’s distraction working its magic, she gave Bryan a discreet nod, signaling him to proceed.

Josue had hired an emcee to add some lightheartedness during the traditional wedding customs. Neither Eileen nor Bryan was very familiar with these traditions, so the extra guidance was a welcome touch.
“Now, Mr. Dawson, you may kiss the bride!” The emcee’s voice boomed with excitement, electrifying the atmosphere.
Bryan leaned forward, gently cupping Eileen’s face. His eyes sparkled with love and anticipation.
Just as Bryan was about to kiss Eileen, Gabriela planted a kiss on Eileen’s cheek before he could. The crowd erupted in laughter.
