Chapter 727
Eileen knew arguing with him was futile. She narrowed her eyes and demanded, “Where’s the doctor I asked you to bring?”
“The doctor will be here this afternoon, I’ve arranged everything,” Bryan assured her. He gazed at her bare, naturally beautiful face, illuminated by the morning light, and impulsively kissed her.
He remarked, “It’s no wonder people believe you’re single.”
His grip on her waist tightened. There were no visible signs that she had ever been married—her good figure and youthful appearance betrayed nothing. Had it not been for her mature demeanor, one could easily have mistaken her for a college student.
Eileen was caught off guard by the sudden, quick kiss, causing her to glance outside. The large yard was empty, to her relief. She exhaled softly, about to speak, when she felt a pull at her clothing. Looking down, she saw Gabriela standing there, tugging at her clothes with a pout, evidently wanting a kiss too. Bryan released Eileen and leaned down to give Gabriela a kiss.
Gabriela, however, huffed and tugged him away, clearly still wanting a kiss from Eileen. Watching Bryan’s attempt being playfully rebuffed, Eileen couldn’t help but smile. She bent down and gently kissed Gabriela on the cheek.
Bryan knew whenever he was away, Gabriela missed him terribly and always asked to see him. Yet when he was present, she seemed to pay him little attention. To catch Gabriela’s attention, he needed to kiss Eileen—a tactic that always worked.
“There’s something off about this yard.” Bryan shifted the conversation, remarking, “It’s hard to believe a place this big is kept so tidy with only servants.”
Eileen, who had been preoccupied with thinking about Leyla since her arrival, hadn’t given it much thought.
“I’ve been wondering the same thing. Mr. Finche—” Eileen paused, correcting herself, “I mean, my father—claims he’s working to support us, but it just doesn’t seem feasible to manage such a large mansion with only two servants, not to mention supporting my sick grandmother. Even if my cousins also worked to make money, they can’t afford to live like this.”
The costs of maintaining the mansion alone would be substantial each month. Additionally, the travel expenses for them to go to work were also high, considering the distance. The numbers just didn’t seem to add up.
“I think they’re pretending to be poor. Maybe they’re wary of me,” Eileen said.
She saw nothing wrong with their conclusion, considering she hadn’t disclosed her true identity to them either. Leyla had been nothing but kind to her.
Gianna appeared somewhat aloof, but Eileen attributed this to Gianna not being her biological mother. However, since her arrival, her biological father, Conroy, had barely spoken to her.
Last night, she had tried to talk to Conroy after dinner, but his cold demeanor had left her unable to say anything to him.
Amidst the silence, footsteps approached from outside. Gianna ushered Leyla into the room. Spotting Eileen and Bryan, she promptly said, “Sit down. Breakfast will be served shortly. I’ve even requested an extra egg custard for the child.”
Leyla scrutinized Bryan from head to toe with evident hostility. She beckoned Eileen closer. “Eileen, come and sit down.”
