Bryan reached out, gently pinching her chin and turning her face toward him. “Aren’t you worried about them pushing you around? What’s the plan here? Trying to take over the Vazquez family is challenging, but there’s no need to risk yourself like this.”
Eileen knew that associating herself with VQ Group meant setting the stage for an inevitable confrontation with Conroy. If Conroy found out she had discovered that VQ Group belonged to the Vazquez family, she would be in grave danger.
Eileen patted Bryan’s shoulder. “My grandmother doesn’t care about the family wealth. What bothers her is that my mother hasn’t been laid to rest in the ancestral tomb yet. She is convinced that my father is cheating and wants me to find out who the other woman is. She believes that if we can catch him, it’ll be enough to force him out of the family. And if he retaliates against the business, well, at least my mother will be able to rest in the tomb, even if it means she’s alone.”
Talking about this daunting task made her head ache. Bryan, even with his striking features and effortless charm, had never made her worry.
But now, for the first time, she had to catch someone in an affair, and that someone was her own father.
“Do you think the woman your father is seeing is in the company?” Bryan asked.
Eileen shook her head and responded, “I’m not certain, but the company is buzzing with rumors. There’s likely someone who’s in the know. Moreover, my father hardly ever stays at the Vazquez family home. If he’s indeed having an affair, he might be living with that woman. That’s why I need to get close to him.”
“It seems, from what you’ve mentioned, that I have your father to thank for this opportunity to see you,” Bryan chuckled and continued to talk with her a bit longer. After they finished lunch, he suggested that Eileen take a nap. He also advised her to rest well, warning that otherwise, she might lack the energy for work the next day.

Initially, Eileen hadn’t grasped Bryan’s implications, but as night fell, she understood everything.
The drawback of an extended afternoon nap was her newfound insomnia at night. Bryan incessantly badgered her, behaving almost manically, and claimed that more physical activity would help her sleep. His words rang somewhat familiar, yet the sound of his heavy breathing next to her ear interrupted her thoughts. She couldn’t recall the exact moment he had said this before, but she was certain he had made similar remarks in bed before.
His insistence on the afternoon nap for Gabriela was clearly a ploy to ensure she would be awake to keep him company at night.
The following morning, Eileen showed up at VQ Group sporting two prominent dark circles under her eyes. She had Bryan drop her off a block away from the building. Then, she made her way to the personnel department with her entry report in hand.
She was escorted to the executive department for registration. After introducing herself to the team, she was shown to her desk by Savanna Welch, the head of the department. Eileen removed her thick down jacket and settled into her new workspace.
No sooner had she settled into her seat than she was summoned for a task.
“Hey, newcomer, take this to the top floor,” a voice commanded. A sealed envelope landed with a thud on Eileen’s desk. Eileen looked up at a woman drenched in perfume and caked in makeup, appearing older than her years.
“This document seems like it might be confidential. Are you sure I should handle it as the newcomer?” Eileen questioned.
