“I’m swamped with work right now. Otherwise, I would have offered to help you with your task,” Lenny smiled and extended her hand. “There are only two of us interns here, so we should stick together.”
Eileen hesitated and then shook Lenny’s hand. It had been a while since she had connected with someone at work like this, and it felt a bit strange.
“Just call me Lenny,” Lenny said, leaning closer to read Eileen’s name tag. “Eileen Curtis. That’s a nice name.”
Eileen smiled and filled a paper cup with water. She chatted with Lenny for a few more minutes before deciding to get back to work.
On her way back to her seat, she passed by the elevator just as the doors opened.
Inside, Kinsey was talking with a young woman, maybe in her early twenties, dressed in a cute, almost doll-like way.
A few words floated out: “Why didn’t he meet me downstairs? I miss him terribly…”
Kinsey seemed to notice Eileen. His face went white with panic. The elevator doors soon closed, cutting off whatever they were saying.
Eileen turned to Lenny and asked, “Who’s that with Kinsey?”
Lenny gasped and clapped a hand over Eileen’s mouth. “Quiet! That’s Vazquez. You shouldn’t call him by his first name like that.”
Eileen felt resigned and said, “Okay, then who’s the girl with Mr. Vazquez?”
Lenny shook her head. “That girl comes to the company sometimes, but she’s not here for Mr. Vazquez. She’s here to see Mr. Finch.”

“Conroy? He’s over fifty! That girl looked way too young for him.”
“Do you know how long she’s known Mr. Finch?” Eileen asked.
Lenny held up one finger.
“A week.”
Eileen’s eyes widened.
“What? Only a week? Did he often change girlfriends?”
“I’m saying I’ve only been here a week. How am I supposed to know the answer to your question?” Lenny laughed.
“I heard this girl’s just a director in name only. She only comes here for fun, not work. She doesn’t even have an office. When she comes here, she’s usually hanging out in Mr. Finch’s office.”
Conroy had made this girl a director, even though it was clear she wasn’t doing any actual work. This was public knowledge in the company.
Maybe he knew Leyla wouldn’t be able to leave home, so he didn’t even make an effort to hide this.
“Hey, you two! Can one of you take this document up to Mr. Finch’s office on the top floor?” A senior employee of the executive department walked over, holding a document.
‘My stomach is killing me. Can you do me a favour?’
Eileen chose not to take the document herself. Instead, she gave Lenny a gentle tap on the arm. “Lenny, can you take care of this? I’m swamped with tasks.”
