Chapter 778
“Someone is upstairs,” Bryan said, glancing upward.
“Do you think we’ll get a chance to go up?” Eileen asked.
“I doubt we’ll get the opportunity,” Eileen responded, shaking her head. Their visit had already unnerved Conroy too much. He would not allow them upstairs today.
Yet, the visit wasn’t pointless.
Eileen now knew the person hiding in Conroy’s place wasn’t Jessica. She recognized that the beige stocking and the stylish handbag didn’t fit Jessica’s usual style. Was Conroy unfaithful, or had she misunderstood Jessica’s relationship with him?
“As long as the woman remains in Conroy’s house, we have no cause for concern. Once she steps out, we’ll catch sight of her,” Eileen turned to Bryan and declared.
“We’ll sleep in the car tonight.”
“I’m okay with that,” Bryan replied, lifting his eyebrows. “As long as you can handle it.”
Eileen’s expression was one of mild confusion. “Why wouldn’t I be able to handle it? You’re underestimating me. Staying up all night is nothing to me.”
Bryan’s eyes narrowed as he looked from her face to her waist, speaking softly. “I’m concerned about your waist.”
“I’m just sitting in the car for one night. What’s the big deal?” Eileen remained unfazed.
Bryan leaned closer, his voice almost a whisper in her ear. “Are you certain we’ll just be sitting in the car?”
Understanding Bryan’s words, Eileen elbowed him in the chest. “I’ll be by myself!”

“How can I be at ease then?” Bryan replied, his voice filled with concern. “It’s too risky for you to stay in the car alone.”
“But we can’t leave Gabriela at home by herself!” Eileen quickly said, anticipating Bryan’s thoughts.
“That’s decided then. Now, be quiet!” Bryan responded.
At that moment, Conroy came out of the kitchen. Eileen swiftly nudged Bryan aside and moved to Gabriela’s side.
About twenty minutes later, dinner was served, consisting of four dishes and a soup. Eileen and Bryan sat at the table with Conroy but hardly touched their food, engaging only in sparse polite conversation. The meal had taken nearly an hour to prepare, but they finished eating in less than ten minutes. Conroy’s frustration intensified when Bryan candidly critiqued his cooking after the meal.
“Mr. Finch, your cooking could use some work. Perhaps refrain from offering to cook next time,” Bryan said.
Conroy managed a forced smile. “Mr. Dawson, I’ve been cooking for myself for so long; I suppose I’ve grown accustomed to my own style.”
Bryan nodded solemnly and then ventured into more personal territory. “Must be challenging for you, living on your own. I heard your wife passed away a long time ago. Have you considered remarrying?”
Caught off guard by the personal question, Conroy didn’t know what to say. He glanced at Eileen instinctively, unsure if she was aware of the Vazquez family rules.
After a brief hesitation, he replied courteously, “My wife and I shared a profound connection. Although she’s gone, I don’t plan to remarry.”
