Eileen knew Dalores desperately needed support now.
“I’m sorry,” Dalores suddenly whispered.
“Thank you.”
Eileen glanced in the rearview mirror, taking in Dalores’ tear-streaked face. Since learning Emerson’s blood test results, Dalores hadn’t stopped crying.
“Here, dry your eyes,” Eileen said, offering fresh tissues as she parked in front of Kinsey’s place. “There’s still hope. Try not to sink into despair just yet.”
Dalores dabbed at her red-rimmed eyes. “I need you to go with me tomorrow.”
Eileen nodded. “Of course. I’ll pick you up in the morning.”
“Okay.” Dalores exited the car with Emerson in her arms and went inside the villa. The nanny approached, reaching for the baby, but Dalores shied away.
Noting Dalores’ distress, the nanny stepped back.
After seeing Dalores off, Eileen’s mind was a mess. The thought of little Emerson tugged at her heartstrings, filling her with a deep sense of sadness.
Eileen drove straight back to the VQ Group. The moment she stepped into Bryan’s office, she spotted Gabriela playing cheerfully on the table. Without hesitation, she scooped the little girl up into her arms.
Bryan, sensing Eileen’s distress, immediately ended his video conference and approached her.
“I thought you were coming back after getting the test results?” he asked.

Eileen sank onto the sofa, cradling Gabriela. Her brow furrowed as she explained, “I ran into Dalores at the hospital. Emerson is suspected of having acute leukemia. He needs a bone marrow test tomorrow.”
Both Bryan’s and Eileen’s gazes instinctively fell on Gabriela.
Gabriela stared back at them innocently, a tiny toy clutched in her hand.
Bryan sat beside Eileen, gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear. “The success rates for treating leukemia are quite high now. Try not to empathize too deeply; it will only affect you, and it won’t truly comfort Dalores.”
In Alverton, Eileen was likely the only one who could offer Dalores any real comfort.
“I know,” Eileen sighed. “It’s just…” She trailed off, knowing she needed to regain her composure. She had managed to stay calm for Dalores earlier, but seeing Gabriela now stirred up her emotions.
After a moment’s thought, Bryan suggested, “I know some leading experts in this field. I’ll contact them right away and see if they can examine Emerson at the hospital tomorrow.”
“Okay,” Eileen agreed, giving him a gentle nudge to get started.
Bryan quickly arranged a ten-minute video conference with the specialists.
The doctors weren’t alarmed by pediatric leukemia cases. They reassured them that even if diagnosed, it wasn’t as dire as it might seem. Besides, Emerson’s case wasn’t even confirmed yet.
They explained that modern medical advancements had pushed recovery rates to around ninety percent. While the chance of relapse was slightly higher than for non-leukemic children, it wasn’t certain by any means.
