Gabriela darted over to them and declared, “Grandma, Mommy can sleep, and Daddy will take care of me!”
“Exactly, Gabriela! If you don’t feel like playing with Daddy, come play with me. Remember, don’t disturb Mommy when she’s resting. Come, I’ll take you to breakfast.” Leyla bent down, grabbed Gabriela’s hand, and led her to the dining room.
The Vazquez family was in a flurry of activity, making arrangements for Dottie’s burial in the ancestral tomb. There were numerous traditions to navigate, so people were constantly seeking Leyla’s guidance for the ceremony.
Eileen was also thinking about this. If she hadn’t been “punished” too hard by Bryan the previous night, she wouldn’t have overslept until almost noon.
After quickly freshening up, Eileen rushed downstairs and entered the living room, where Leyla’s meaningful gaze met hers.
“Once your mother is laid to rest in the ancestral tomb, you’ll be able to officially come home. Make sure to add your name, Gabriela’s, and Bryan’s to the family tree,” Leyla brought up this topic to spare Eileen any embarrassment.
Eileen quickly sat up straight and replied, “Alright, Grandma, I’ll do as you say.”
Leyla went on to explain, “He was intimidated by me because he coveted the family’s heirloom, knowing that to gain recognition from the family, he needed it to gather everyone in the ancestral hall.”
“Family heirloom?” Eileen scrutinized Leyla from head to toe. “Did you tell me about this on that day?”
“No. The family heirloom was lost during your great-grandfather’s lifetime, but only the previous family leaders knew about it. Conroy and Gianna don’t know this,” Leyla explained.

Conroy and Gianna feared that if they harmed Leyla, they would never find the family heirloom and, consequently, lose their chance to control the VQ Group. The corners of Eileen’s mouth twitched. “Lost?”
Leyla was really good at playing the fool. She had pretended to be clueless and on the brink of death before. In reality, she had been masterfully manipulating Gianna and Conroy. “If you encounter them again, be sure to share the news with them. They’ll likely be furious,” she smiled and winked at Eileen.
Leyla’s desire for revenge remained unrelenting, and she refused to give up until Gianna and Conroy were utterly destroyed.
Eileen was unfamiliar with the rituals of interring a body in the ancestral tomb, so she accompanied Leyla to learn from her. Occasionally, she played with Gabriela but showed no particular interest in Bryan. Her legs felt sore at the sight of him.
After dinner, Eileen received a video call from Ruby. She rushed back to her room, cradling Gabriela in her arms.
It had been a while since Gabriela had last seen Ruby, so she eagerly grabbed the phone and planted a kiss on the screen.
“Miss Grandma!” Gabriela exclaimed.
Ruby replied, “Miss you too, sweetie. Let your mother resolve the issue in Alverton as soon as possible, and then she will take you home to me. We’ll go shopping for new clothes and pretty flowers!”
