About half an hour later, he returned, wearing a frown.
“What’s wrong? Did something happen to him?” Eileen asked.
“It’s nothing serious. He indeed wouldn’t let Bailee see him. The funds I sent monthly weren’t under his control; others received them. My people were hesitant to return the things to me, thinking it would be hard to explain, so they kept quiet and didn’t tell me,” Bryan replied.
Bryan settled onto the bed’s edge, gazing at Eileen’s concerned expression, and stated, “Milford refuses to accept help from anyone. Even if released under these conditions, it will be challenging for us to assist him.”
Eileen’s face fell as she thought of Milford’s reckless yet optimistic demeanor in her mind. Despite his troubled past, his imprisonment at such a young age made her feel for him.
“What’s more, Milford…” Bryan continued, “Trust him. He can do it himself.” He offered a reassuring pat on Eileen’s shoulder and said, “The prison guards have reported that he has remained optimistic throughout his incarceration, which increases the likelihood of a sentence reduction. We’ll receive advance notice if that happens.”
In response, Eileen nodded. “When he’s released, we’ll go pick him up together.”
That night, Eileen’s mind was still preoccupied with the earlier conversation. She had a disturbing dream where Milford was brutally beaten in prison, and she was powerless to stop it, no matter how hard she tried. As a result, she didn’t rest well and had bags under her eyes the next day.
The current day was the day Dottie would be buried in the ancestral cemetery. Eileen had to go to the cemetery.

As Eileen took a few steps back, she collided with someone, prompting a hasty apology. “Oh, I’m so sorry.”
“I’m Keith,” he replied calmly, offering a gentle smile. “You seem exhausted. Perhaps you haven’t been getting enough rest lately. Your mother would be heartbroken to see you like this. You deserve to be happier.”
Noticing the redness around Keith’s eyes, Eileen nodded and said, “Thank you.”
