Eileen’s confusion deepened.
“Don’t worry about it. You should leave early tomorrow. I’ll be the only one here, and they can’t harm me.” Leyla stood up to prepare the bed. “Come, you can sleep here tonight.”
“Leave with me, or I won’t go,” Eileen said. She was about to lie down when Leyla patted her on the shoulder. With a grave expression, Leyla said, “Don’t make hasty decisions now. A businessman can’t stand up to a politician. Don’t you understand this?”
Eileen understood this well. For a businessman to operate, he must adhere to governmental procedures. Historically, ordinary businessmen rarely opposed government officials, not only because they couldn’t win but also because they needed to consider their business operations.
“But I can’t just leave you here,” Eileen said as she settled into bed, cocooning herself in the blanket.
“What can they possibly do to me? They wouldn’t dare harm me, and they can’t force me back to the Brown family to marry that man. I’m not scared,” Leyla said before lying down.
“Then they can’t do anything to me, either. If I don’t marry into their family, they also can’t harm me or make me divorce Bryan. I have nothing to fear,” Eileen said.
Leyla seemed about to respond, but Eileen quickly continued, “I’m just worried about you being mistreated. You’ve been taking care of my mother all these years, and now, you’re confronting the Brown family for me. How can I just leave you to handle this alone?”
For a moment, Leyla was silent. Then, in the quiet darkness, Eileen could hear something—soft, barely audible sobs.
Eileen turned around, gently tucking Leyla in, and said, “Don’t worry about having to fight anyone while I’m here. I’ll solve the matter. If my mother discovered that I acted like a coward at such a young age and let you defend me, she’d haunt my dreams every night to scold me.”

“Your mother adored you so much. How could she ever scold you? Before she passed away, she kept all the clothes you used to wear. And just like she tried to protect you, I’ll do everything I can to protect you, too,” Leyla said, her voice trembling as she patted Eileen’s arm.
Eileen had never truly felt the warmth of a family, and now, she stayed silent. Even though Ruby had always been kind to her and she considered Ruby her mother, she felt more gratitude toward Ruby than anything else. Now, Leyla’s open and honest love warmed her deeply, touching the very bottom of her heart.
Leyla didn’t drift off until the early morning hours, but Eileen couldn’t manage to sleep at all. She quietly slipped out of bed, went to the garden, and called Bryan. In the dead of night, the phone rang several times before Bryan finally picked up. He must have been asleep when it started ringing.
His voice was soft, with a hint of surprise. “It’s really late. Why aren’t you asleep? Did something happen there?”
“Oh, yes. Someone’s trying to take your wife home to be his own,” Eileen said, curling up on the swing and wrapping a shawl around herself.
The bright moonlight reflected in her eyes. Her long black hair fell loosely, and she furrowed her brow slightly.
There was a brief pause on the other end of the line. Bryan’s voice then came back louder. It seemed like he had stepped out of his room. “What happened?” he asked.
