Eileen was left speechless upon hearing his words.
Eileen walked into the room and scooped up Gabriela, who was eagerly running to her. After giving Bryan a quick glance, she turned to Leyla and said seriously, “I’m still troubled by the marriage that was arranged for me since birth. This isn’t the time for such discussions.”
Leyla’s face initially fell into a sad expression, but within seconds, she squinted and smiled. “I think Bryan’s idea is actually good. The Brown family has always had a good reputation and values it highly. It’s absurd already that they want to force you to divorce Bryan and marry their son. They wouldn’t go so far as to harm your baby before making you marry their son, would they?” A child held significant importance.
“We’ll need you to take care of Gabriela for a while now,” Bryan said to Leyla, nodding at her and not even asking for Eileen’s opinion.
“I’m more than willing to do that for you two,” Leyla replied. “The Vazquez family has caused you a lot of trouble after your return to Alverton. I feel powerless to help in other ways.” She looked at Eileen with mixed emotions and sighed. Ultimately, she had not been able to protect Eileen well.
Seeing the guilt in Leyla’s eyes, Eileen set Gabriela down and went over to her. Grasping Leyla’s arm, she said, “Grandma, you’ve done so much for us. You don’t need to worry about the issue with the Brown family.”
“Alright.” Leyla nodded. But then, she thought of something. “The Brown family’s people are coming tomorrow. Why don’t you leave today?”
“I can’t do that.” Eileen shook her head. “I suspect someone is keeping an eye on us outside. The Brown family probably knows I’m back now.”

The Brown family, however, preferred not to create a fuss. They allowed Eileen the time to process the situation and did not barge in immediately after her arrival.
“Don’t worry, Grandma. I’ve looked into the Brown family, and they won’t resort to forceful measures. When the people from the Brown family come tomorrow, you can stay in your room with Gabriela. Eileen and I will talk to them,” Bryan said confidently.
Leyla’s relief was immediate. She gently patted the back of Eileen’s hand and said, “Eileen, I’m relieved now. I’m looking forward to reuniting with your mother after I’m gone. I’ll tell her that you’ve found a good man and that she should be happy about it.”
Maybe finding Eileen had fulfilled Leyla’s wish. Whenever Leyla mentioned Dottie, Eileen felt a pang of sadness because Leyla seemed eager to reunite with
Dottie in the afterlife.
Eileen held Leyla’s hand and remained silent for a long while. Gabriela ran over to them, chattering excitedly, and tugged at Leyla’s hand.
“Great grandma, fish…”
“Alright, Gabriela, I’ll join you to watch the fish. I know how much you enjoy them, so I bought more for you. Let’s see if you like these, too,” Leyla said.
Their voices gradually faded as they walked away. The living room fell into silence. Eileen turned toward Bryan and asked, “The Brown family’s people are coming tomorrow. Do you have a plan yet?”
“No,” Bryan admitted frankly.
