Denise came back downstairs very soon. She glancedatFranklinandsaidsoftly. “Serraisn’t here. I have just checked with the maids. They said she left before dawn.”

The dining room fell into deeper silence. Franklin stood up and said, “I granted her life and gave her privileged existence.Whatmore could she possibly want?” He then turned and left the room.
