Chapter 203
Chapter 203:
“He’s alive. We’re taking him to Doc right now p>
“Go,” Ghazi told me. “I’ll take care of the rest. Go to your husband and be with him. It’s time for me to take care of you, cousin p>
“Shit! Right, okay, I’m going p>
I may or may not have run several red lights and almost crashed into a massive truck, but I finally made it into the quaint neighborhood. I didn’t want to ask how badly Oscar was hurt, fearing that it might drive me mad. I’d rather not know and just hope for the best. I had never prayed so hard in my life—and never cursed so often. My heart finally slowed its frantic beating when I parked my car and let the others handle the rest.
“Zal, good afternoon.” Doc Stevens greeted me calmly as he hovered over the bed, tending to my man. I couldn’t see anything from the door. My feet seemed frozen, refusing to step further into the small bedroom when I saw the large stains of blood on Oscar’s crisp white shirt. So much blood.
Too much blood.
“It’s not all your husband’s blood. Not all of it. Congratulations, by the way,” Doc said softly, as though he could read my thoughts.
“Thank you. How is he?” My voice sounded rough, and that was when Stevens turned to look at me.
“Oscar had a few stitches. A bullet grazed his hip. He’s going to be walking funny for the next couple of days. But what knocked him out was a blunt hit to his head. I don’t think he has a concussion, but you’ll need to wake him up every couple of hours tonight. Assuming you want to get him to your man cave once he wakes up p>
I chuckled, steeling myself as I stepped into the room. Stevens had finished stitching up Oscar’s hip and covered him with a thin blanket.
“Come with me, let him rest for a while. I’ll give you the good painkillers for your husband.” He led me to the kitchen, grabbed two cold beers from the fridge, and told me to sit and calm down. “He’ll be as good as new in a week or two p>
“I gotta say, worry is a new look on you. But you know I’m the best. Oscar is going to be okay. Just keep him out of trouble next time, okay p>
“Yeah, shit…
Thanks, Doc. But I assure you, there won’t be a next time p>
He laughed and shook his head. “Zal, I’m going to have to trust you on that one.
Though, with your line of work, just make sure Chip and Bear shadow him when needed.
Those two intervene at the right time. You’ve got excellent men working for you p>
Once his words left his mouth, the thought of my job potentially threatening Oscar’s life crept back into my mind, making me worry again. Damn… I’d never felt like this before. I took a big gulp of the cold beer and let Doc Stevens leave before walking to another room to grab the meds for Oscar.
Two hours later, I had Oscar settled in our bed, wearing only his briefs while I put his damaged clothes into a plastic bag for my men to dispose of later.
“Hey, baby,” I kissed his forehead and gently ran my thumb down his pale cheek.
“Zal… are we back home?” His voice was raspy, barely audible.
“Yeah, Stevens let you out of his lair. I have to say, I don’t like him seeing you in your briefs p>
He smiled, grabbed my wrist, and kissed the palm of my hand, then kissed my ring finger, telling me he loved me.
“I love you more p>
“Lay with me, and tell me what happened with my dad?” And so I did. I laid next to his healthy side, pulling him close before kissing his lips and telling him once again that I loved him. “Ghazi took care of everything. He called me while you were sleeping. He had the scene cleaned up and had our cop friend cover the incident as a freak accident. Your dad didn’t make it. Your mom and sister are on their way from London, and your PA Felicity called them—somehow, she’s got your back. We need to talk to her p>
