These last couple of days had been filled with both passion and deep emotional revelations. We had grown closer, more intimate, and I was dangerously starting to obsess over him. Somehow, we both knew this trip had been a turning point in our relationship—or whatever this was between us. Since our connection was more like a secret affair, I didn’t know where it could lead, but I couldn’t deny how much he meant to me.

We spent our days lounging by the pool, taking long walks in the woods, enjoying meals together, watching movies, and talking for hours about everything.
When morning came and we began packing our bags, a sense of nervousness crept in. Both of us longed for the best, yet we knew that as soon as we returned to the city, we would be back in the closet, sneaking around for secret rendezvous.
“Will you stay with me tonight? I don’t think I’m ready to be apart from you,” I said, my voice tinged with vulnerability. It had been a blissful week, and I felt closer to Oscar than ever before.
“I will,” he replied with a smile, and that was all I needed.
The blissful feeling of my idyllic mountain retreat with Oscar didn’t last long. My mood quickly changed as my family was back to irritate me with their constant meddling in my personal life.
“So, did you meet any nice women while you were on your business trip?” Aunt Yasmin asked, a hopeful gleam in her eyes.
Before I left, I had told Robyn to give my family an excuse for my secret getaway with Oscar. Robyn, being the perfect planner, told them that I was attending a boring week-long business convention. But now that I was back, it meant I had to endure my family again. I felt frustration bubbling up inside me. I could feel my blood boiling. I didn’t need their approval on how to live my life, and I certainly didn’t need their constant nagging. “I appreciate your concern, but I’m perfectly happy with the person I’m with,” I blurted out.
Somehow, amid my frustration, I managed to tell them that I was seeing someone.

I took a deep breath before continuing. “That’s because I’ve been keeping it a secret.” Argh. I was getting frustrated and needed to get out of there. Fast.
There was a moment of stunned silence before Aunt Yasmin spoke up. “But, Ghazi, you can’t keep her a secret forever. You’ve got to tell us. Why would you even keep her in the dark? I don’t like this. Is she going to cause a scandal for our family? Think of your family’s reputation, Ghazi.” I felt an overwhelming urge to storm out of the restaurant at Aunt Yasmin’s words. We weren’t exactly decent people. I had dealt with a lot of bad, ugly stuff in my life—things she wouldn’t even acknowledge—that our family had always been involved in.
