Chapter 42
Chapter 42:
The man was talented and Oscar loved every moment of it as he grabbed my shirt, pulled me closer and locked my lips to his.
Everything was going to be just great. Oscar and I were going to be just fine. My mind reassured me as we enjoyed our time with Florian.
It started as one of those perfect days. Robyn was busy micro-managing my office workload while I was scheduled for a field day with cousin Zal. A new shipment of heavy machinery for the city’s newest construction project had just arrived. We were hands-on at the building site for the new office towers, which were part of our beloved mayor’s pet project.
I made sure that all companies contracted for the building site went through us.
This was the lucrative part of the cartel business, not the illegal drugs and weapons. While other crime syndicates focused on the shadier side of things, I had managed to steer our family’s interests when I unexpectedly stumbled upon the opportunity and got involved just before I took over as the head of the family after my parents’ disappearance. Since then, I had been deeply invested in development projects, building networks, placing our contractors, and making sure I lined the pockets of the right corrupted influential people.
We’re talking millions in commissions alone from government and private projects while ensuring that the right people enjoyed their kickbacks. And with the big money came big responsibilities. We had to make sure that all the appointed contractors were playing by our rules. With the kind of high-profile jobs we were giving them, we made sure they adhered to our terms.
That was why when one of Zal’s men saw a construction crew mobilizing a logistics truck carrying materials under a different company name, it immediately raised a red flag.
The foreman was called in to take responsibility. Official source is.net
“Please… I know it’s a mistake. I was just trying to save money on our expenses.

“You know, Zal,” I interrupted, completely ignoring the foreman. “This construction site can be a very dangerous place. One has to be careful. Surely, you wouldn’t want to slip and fall to your death… I mean, with the economy.” I smirked, glancing at the bald man whose eyes were now glistening with fear.

The older man trembled, but I had to set an example. No one messes with The Taheri.
“I understand completely, cousin Ghazi. Now, let me take out the trash while you check our balance sheets in the comfort of my office downstairs.” Zal lazily stepped up to the landing.
The bald, overweight foreman was visibly shaking now, tears falling from his cheeks. He looked at Zal, shaking his head frantically, apologizing repeatedly as he moved backward, further onto the ledge of the unfinished seventh floor of the new twenty-floor office building.
I nodded and walked back toward the elevator, but then I heard a dreadful scream—followed by the sickening sound of a man falling to his death. I froze halfway across the floor. Zal ran a tight ship, and we couldn’t afford to be lenient with our vendors and contractors.
They needed to watch and learn, respect the contracts they signed. No excuses.
By the time I arrived at the apartment, I was exhausted. I was needed for appearances while Zal took care of the rest. Sometimes, hearing the screams was too much.
The torture, the weight of the responsibility, was hard to endure. Still, I had to be there. As the head of the family, it was my duty. Yeah, some days, I hated my job.
At least when evening came, I knew I’d have Oscar.
Tonight, we planned on going out for dinner.
The restaurant we chose was private, secluded—a place we liked because the staff was professional and the people didn’t bat an eye when they saw two men sharing a meal together. We’d been there a few times before and it always felt safe.
