Thinking back, my heart ached painfully.
My wolf whimpered, a low, mournful sound buried deep in my chest.
The memories of my past life, of Jared’s coldness and Emily’s manipulative kindness, were agonizing
Suddenly, my vision was blocked by a splash of pink.
Grayson skillfully wrapped a soft, warm wolfskin stole around my neck.
The scent of the wool, earthy and comforting, calmed my wolf’s distress.
His dark eyes held a flicker of unexpected gentleness, contrasting with his rebellious appearance.
His wolf’s presence, usually so dominant, was strangely subdued, almost tender.
“ You just had a cold yesterday; don’t catch another one.” His voice was low and lazy as he adjusted the stole carefully, his breathtaking face close enough that I could feel his warm breath against my ear.
His closeness was a powerful drug, calming and arousing my wolf at the same time.
The warmth on my neck melted the ice in my heart.
My wolf purred, a soft vibration spreading through my body.
Grayson straightened, his gaze on Jared.

My wolf snarled in response.

“Let’s go.” My wolf urged me forward, away from the poisonous atmosphere.
Jared stood there, watching Grayson’s wolf–drawn sled disappear from view, his fists clenching unconsciously, a wave of indescribable emotions surging within him.
Memories of childhood flashed in his mind, when he would wrap a warm wolfskin stole around me like Grayson did, taking me to the Pack Council grounds.
His wolf howled silently in his heart, a lament of lost connection and frustrated longing.

“Jared, we should go; we’ll be late,” Emily said, tugging his sleeve.
He came back to reality, complaining at her, “Why did you stop me just now p>

Jared was annoyed and didn’t want to comfort her; he just turned to get in the sled.
