The Husband I Loved for Eight Years Never Loved Me Chapter 295

Chapter 295 Lingering Fear

“Peter is busy these days too, which is good. It keeps her from sitting around at home with nothing to do. I’ll be discharged in a couple of days, and I’d rather not have her raising a ruckus at home while I’m trying to rest,” Mrs. Jennings said. “And you talk about your sister as if she’s still a child.” It seemed Mrs. Jennings wasn’t surprised at the mention of Peter’s name, which meant she already knew something.

Julian Jennings replied, “In my eyes, there’s no difference between her and Stella.”

Mrs. Jennings smiled. “Well then, as her big brother, you should be prepared to support her for the rest of her life!”

“Even if I wanted to, I’m afraid she wouldn’t let me,” Julian said.

“…”

Rachel Royce listened quietly to the mother and son’s conversation. ’With such a gentle mother, Julian and June are truly fortunate,’ she thought.

“Oh, Rachel.”

Rachel snapped out of her thoughts and looked at Julian. “Yes?”

“There’s a document from overseas that I need you to handle. I’ll send it to your email in a bit,” Julian said.

“Okay, no problem,” Rachel replied.

While eating, Mrs. Jennings praised Florence Preston’s cooking profusely.

“I’m glad you like it, Mrs. Jennings. Please feel free to come over for dinner when you have time,” Rachel said.

Mrs. Jennings smiled and agreed, “That sounds wonderful.”

Once they had finished eating, Rachel moved to pack up the thermal containers. However, Mrs. Jennings insisted on washing them first before giving them back, and Rachel couldn’t argue.

Mrs. Jennings took the containers to the bathroom.

Rachel asked, “Professor, has President Quinn’s side found anything?”

“This incident is inextricably linked to Victor Yates,” Julian said.

“Victor Yates!” Rachel recalled the man. He had been bribed by someone from Cedarwood, hired people to stage a car crash, and then fled abroad, disappearing without a trace.

“So he’s holding a grudge?”

’Instead of lying low after escaping, he actually dared to come back for revenge.’

“Victor Yates wouldn’t have the guts for this on his own. He was likely instigated by someone. After he went abroad, his family sold off their property. Now, he’s addicted to gambling and buried under a mountain of debt.”

They hadn’t continued to track him back then, predicting he would come to a bad end. Letting him self-destruct was a more painful punishment than wasting the manpower and resources to extradite him back to the country.

“Not long ago, someone paid off all his debts for him.”

Rachel frowned. “So Victor Yates is just the scapegoat.”

“He’ll definitely take all the blame. The site investigation showed that a weighted device was added to the chandelier. But when it fell, the chain caught on the device, so it didn’t come crashing all the way down. Looking at it that way, we were very lucky.”

Hearing this, Rachel suddenly felt a wave of lingering fear.

’So, if not for that fluke, the entire chandelier would have come down. Julian wouldn’t have just been injured—he could have been killed.’

Seeing the color drain from Rachel’s face, Julian knew she would worry, which was why he hadn’t told her the details at the time. “Heaven was watching over us. We’re both fine now, so you don’t have to worry anymore, Rachel.”

Snapping back to her senses, Rachel said, still shaken, “Then someone in the administration department must have been bribed.”

’Clearly, the culprit was aiming to kill someone. How vicious and cruel. Without an insider leaking information, how could they have known the schedule for the annual party?’

Julian’s expression darkened. “Ian has already found the person. It looks like we’ll have to do a major clean-up after the New Year.”

“Then who was the one pulling the strings?”

Just then, Mrs. Jennings came out of the bathroom, and the two of them dropped the subject.

Rachel stayed at the hospital a while longer before taking her leave.

She got in her car.

Julian sent her a message.

Rachel opened her phone. The message read: “Go have fun with June. Don’t worry about anything else.”

She looked at the message.

Rachel replied, “Okay.”
