Chapter 159 Medicine Time
Estelle’s POV
Right before I stepped out of the car, I reached into the glove compartment and pulled out a small glass bottle. The singular pill inside rattled softly.
I stepped out of the car and closed the door with a firm click. Finn’s eyes widened when he saw me approaching. His mouth fell open in shock.
“Mo—?” he whispered, taking a step back, his words clogged in his throat as he refused to spit it out despite his instincts.
I didn’t give him time to run. Moving quickly, I grabbed his arm and forced the pill between his lips. Finn immediately started fighting, his small fists pounding against my hands.
“No! No! I don’t want it!” he screamed, trying to spit out the pill.
I clamped my hand over his mouth, holding it there until I felt him swallow. His green eyes filled with tears as he glared at me with pure hatred.
“There,” I said, releasing him. “All done.”
Finn stumbled backward, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. “You poisoned me! You gave me poison!”
“Estelle?” Kendra’s voice came from behind me. I turned to see her jogging over, her face bright with surprise. “It really is you! I can’t believe you really came back.”
I smiled at Kendra. We had been close before I left Moonveil, and I was partly worried that she might resent me for leaving without looking back. However, it didn’t seem like the case. “Hello, Kendra. You look well.”
“Thank you,” she said, still catching her breath. “I was just about to bring Finn back to the infirmary when he escaped. His health hasn’t been good lately, but whenever he gains a little more strength, he will try to escape, and then immediately fall sick again.”
I nodded, glancing down at Finn. He was now sitting on the ground, crying loudly and pointing at me.
“She gave me poison! She’s trying to kill me!” Finn wailed, his voice echoing across the courtyard.
Kendra’s face went pale. “Finn! Don’t say such terrible things! Estelle is your mother! She would never hurt you. She only has your best intentions at heart.”
I kept my expression cold and said nothing. Kendra sighed as she looked at me, and I noted a bit of sympathy in her eyes. She probably felt bad for me, seeing how my supposed son thought I was capable of killing him. Regardless, I didn’t explain what the pills were. Kendra didn’t ask either. I could tell that she completely trusted me.
Finn continued his tantrum on the ground, rolling around dramatically. I walked over and grabbed his arm, pulling him to his feet.
“Get up,” I said firmly.
Seeing that his crying wasn’t working anymore, Finn immediately stopped his tears. Instead, he started hitting my hand, trying to break free from my grip.
“Let me go! Let me go!” he screamed, kicking his legs.
But even though I wasn’t using much strength, Finn was still just a child. His attempts to escape were useless against me.
I started walking toward the pack house, dragging the screaming boy behind me. Over my shoulder, I called to Kendra, “I’ll take care of Finn. You can go rest now.”
Relief washed over Kendra’s face. “Oh, thank you! He’s been such a handful today.”
I could hear her muttering under her breath as she walked away. Something about “monster child” and “finally someone else’s problem”.
Finn continued to kick and scream as I pulled him through the front door of the pack house. The familiar smell of the place hit me. No matter what, this was a place I had spent a majority of my life in.
I headed straight for the main staircase, planning to go to the family bedrooms. Dorothy would most likely be there, and probably Asher too. I had no intention of taking Finn to the infirmary. Asher ought to start learning how to be a father and watch after his own child.
As we climbed the stairs, Finn’s struggles became more desperate. “I hate you! I hate you so much!”
“I know,” I replied calmly.
Maybe if this were a year ago, I would’ve been devastated to hear such a thing. However, it didn’t cause my heart to even skip one beat. It felt as normal as hearing an average weather report. What the boy felt for me no longer concerned me in the slightest. This was also the last time I would be helping him.
The sound of our commotion echoed through the hallway. Heavy footsteps approached from above, and I looked up to see Asher appearing at the top of the stairs.
His face lit up when he saw me. “Estelle! You came!”
But then his gaze dropped to Finn, who was still kicking and screaming while I dragged him along. Asher’s expression changed completely.
His eyebrows drew together in confusion and displeasure. The smile vanished from his face as he took in the scene—me, stone-faced and determined, pulling his crying son up the stairs like he was nothing more than a piece of luggage.
Asher frowned.
