Johnathan could hear footsteps and the rustle of luggage through the phone. He quickly said. “I’m fine. I just wanted to hear your voice.”
Sierra didn’t argue. She simply replied, “I booked the earliest flight I could. I’m coming to you.”
That broke Johnathan’s composure. “You really don’t need to!”
As much as he wanted to see her, he couldn’t feel at ease letting her travel alone–especially with the lingering threat of that organization.
“just found out some things,” he said quietly. “I’m feeling a little overwhelmed.”
His voice had steadied somewhat, and that gave Sierra space to ask gently, “Do you want to talk about it?”
Sierra… I might not be my mother’s child.”
Johnathan’s words came slowly, heavily.
Sierra sucked in a sharp breath. No wonder he was acting so out of character.
She knew what Wendy had meant to him. After her death, his entire existence had been fueled by vengeance.
His life had revolved around one thing–avenging his mother.
And now… someone was telling him she might not have been his real mother? Then what had his life meant all these years?

A shadow flitted through Sierra’s mind. It was the same one Johnathan had thought of.

She felt an ache not just for him, but for everything he’d gone through.
If her hunch was correct, then Johnathan had spent his whole life as someone else’s joke.
How could anyone be so cruel?

“Wait for me,” she told him softly.

Johnathan sat frozen for a moment, torn between gratitude and fear.

“Make sure she’s protected,” Johnathan instructed. “Escort her every step of the way.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll have people on her the whole time. Nothing will happen.”

Johnathan checked the earliest incoming flight–it would land around ten in the morning.
At dawn, he knocked on Chandler’s door and asked to borrow the car.
Still rattled from the night before, Chandler didn’t question him and handed over the keys right away.
Once Johnathan left, Chandler went to Silas’s room.
“Dad… I think we can’t hide it anymore.”
The commotion from last night had woken Silas hours ago, but he hadn’t gone out to face Johnathan.
Hearing his son’s words, he sighed.
“Then don’t hide it. Tell him what we can.”
That was Chandler’s plan, too. They’d moved out here hoping to stay out of sight–for Johnathan’s sake.
They did love him. They did care.
But some truths were just too hard to speak.
Sierra, despite a sleepless night, didn’t feel tired at all. As soon as she stepped off the plane, she was ready to go find Johnathan.
To her surprise, he was already waiting at the airport.
Her eyes lit up the moment she saw him. She ran toward him.
It had only been a day, but it felt like ages.
He took her to grab a bite first, then they began the long drive to the town.
It would take more than two hours to get there. During that time, Johnathan told her what had happened the night before.
When she heard that his grandfather and uncle had moved away years ago and never once thought to tell him… her heart ached.
She didn’t say anything. She just reached over and placed her hand over his.
When they arrived, Chandler seemed calmer than the day before. Almost at peace.
Maybe he’d made a decision.
He wasn’t surprised to see Sierra With Johnathan. In fact, he said, “You must be Sierra.”
Johnathan raised a brow. He’d never mentioned her to Chandler–how did he know?
What he didn’t realize was that even from afar, they had never truly stopped paying attention to his life.
“Come in and eat something,” Chandler offered.
“No.”
Johnathan looked at him, then at Silas, who had stayed quiet like a shadow in the corner. His voice was firm.
“Tell me what you’ve been hiding. Once I know, I’ll leave.”
