“Ariana,” he said, his voice sharper now, steady but edged with urgency.
“I didn’t move,” she replied quickly, though the tension in her voice betrayed her. Her fingers tightened in his shirt as if holding onto him was the only thing keeping her steady.
“You almost did,” Kael said.

“You feel it clearly now,” Vaelor said.
Kael stepped forward immediately, placing himself more firmly between Ariana and Vaelor as lightning flickered faintly across his arm. “You don’t get to speak to her,” he said, his voice low and controlled.
“I don’t need to,” Vaelor replied.
