Chapter 457 The Debt She Never Owed
Ryan lowered his gaze slightly, meeting Rose’s trembling eyes.
He didn’t answer her.
Instead, he turned back toward Julia.
There were too many people standing around them now.
People who had heard every word.
Ryan’s expression remained calm, but his voice was cold enough to silence the corridor.
“President Ellis, when Rose was in danger, I was the one who saved her.”
Julia’s face stiffened.
Ryan continued.
“She was about to go over a cliff. I pulled her back, carried her to the hospital myself, and stayed there while she received treatment.”
His eyes never left Julia.
“You were there.”
The words landed heavily.
“You saw my injuries. You saw me at the hospital.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“So you knew exactly who saved Rose.”
A murmur went through the people nearby.
Ryan’s voice remained level.
“Yet you took that favor and turned it into a debt Rose supposedly owed your family.”
He paused.
“Every time the Robinson family wanted something from her, you brought up Trevor’s supposed sacrifice and used it to pressure her.”
His gaze hardened.
“Is that really how you think the head of the Robinson family should conduct herself?”
The corridor went completely silent.
Everyone had heard him.
And now there was no room for anyone to misunderstand the situation.
Rose didn’t owe the Robinson family her life.
She never had.
Julia’s face changed.
She had never expected Rose to openly confront her like this, much less expose the entire story in front of so many people.
And she certainly hadn’t expected Ryan to be standing there.
But Ryan had heard everything.
There was no way to take it back now.
Julia remembered that day clearly.
She had seen Ryan arrive at the hospital.
He had been pale, his arm injured, and yet he had carried Rose there himself.
She had known.
Of course she had known.
But by then, she had already made a decision.
Rose and Ryan’s marriage had been damaged beyond repair.
Neither of them trusted the other enough to speak honestly anymore.
Julia had taken a gamble.
She had convinced herself that if she removed Ryan from the story, neither Rose nor Ryan would ever know the truth.
Ryan wouldn’t take credit for saving Rose.
Rose wouldn’t realize that Ryan had risked his life for her.
And without that knowledge, Rose would never have any reason to reconsider her feelings for him.
It had seemed like a calculated risk.
In business, sometimes you took a risk because the potential payoff was worth it.
Julia had thought this was one of those times.
She had been wrong.
And today had already been a disaster.
The Robinson family had just lost a development project they had been counting on.
The property was extremely valuable, with projected profits in the billions once the development was completed.
The Robinsons had invested enormous resources into securing the deal.
Losing it was bad enough.
Then Julia had run into Rose.
Her anger had gotten the better of her.
She had wanted someone to blame.
She had never imagined the confrontation would end with her own deception exposed in public.
Rose stared at Ryan.
For a long moment, she couldn’t speak.
Then, very quietly, she said, “It was you.”
Ryan looked at her.
Rose’s gaze dropped to his arm.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
The injury.
The hospital.
The period when Ryan had been unable to use his arm normally.
She remembered being kidnapped and abandoned in the wilderness.
The terrain had been dangerous—steep slopes, rocky ground, cliffs.
One wrong step could have killed her.
And Ryan had gone after her.
He had risked his life to bring her back.
Not Trevor.
Ryan.
He had never told her.
Not once.
Rose’s throat tightened.
“You…”
Her voice was barely audible.
Ryan’s eyes flickered.
Rose looked up at him.
There was the faintest curve to her lips, but it wasn’t really a smile.
It hurt too much to be one.
“You didn’t have to hide it from me.”
Ryan’s expression shifted almost imperceptibly.
Rose continued.
“I’ll repay you.”
Her voice was quiet.
“I owe you for saving my life. I won’t pretend I don’t.”
She looked directly into his eyes.
“But you don’t need to worry.”
Ryan’s fingers tightened at his sides.
“I won’t misunderstand this.”
Rose’s smile became even thinner.
“I won’t suddenly fall in love with you again because you saved me.”
Ryan’s eyes trembled.
Rose knew him too well.
She understood why he had kept silent.
He was afraid that if she learned the truth, she would start hoping again.
Afraid she would mistake his actions for proof that he still loved her.
Afraid she would believe there was still a chance for them.
That was why he had said nothing.
There couldn’t possibly be another reason.
He simply didn’t want her to become attached to him again.
The realization hurt more than Rose wanted to admit.
It felt as though something inside her chest had been burned raw.
She laughed softly.
“I understand.”
She looked into his eyes.
“I’ll repay you for what you did.”
Her voice remained steady.
“But you don’t have to worry about me using it as an excuse to stay in your life.”
She paused.
“I won’t.”
With that, Rose turned around.
She took Diana by the arm and walked away.
Diana, still stunned by everything she’d just heard, barely had time to react before Rose pulled her down the corridor.
Ryan’s hand lifted instinctively.
Rose’s arm brushed against his fingertips.
He could have stopped her.
He didn’t.
His hand fell back to his side.
It hadn’t even been a conscious decision.
For one brief second, he’d simply wanted to hold on.
Ryan didn’t follow.
He knew Rose well enough to understand what had just happened.
Every time he’d tried to push her away, he’d believed he was protecting both of them.
But now she had finally understood his intentions.
She wouldn’t chase him.
She wouldn’t cling to him.
And she certainly wouldn’t use his sacrifice as a reason to remain in his life.
Ryan stood there silently.
*****
Julia wasn’t doing much better.
The confrontation had left more than one person embarrassed.
And then Trevor arrived.
He hadn’t crossed paths with Rose.
By the time he reached the restaurant, Rose had already left.
But he saw Ryan and Julia still standing in the corridor.
Trevor’s attention immediately shifted to them.
He had already heard about the development project.
The Robinson family had expected to win.
They hadn’t.
That alone was enough to make him suspicious.
The Robinsons had extensive connections throughout the business and political world. A family with that kind of influence rarely lost a major project without a fight.
Yet somehow, the deal they had been certain of securing had slipped through their fingers.
Then Trevor saw Ryan.
He slowed.
His eyes narrowed.
“Was it you?”
Ryan looked at him.
Trevor stepped closer.
“Are you connected to whoever won the development contract?”
Julia turned toward Ryan as well.
“President Knight, what exactly are you trying to do?”
Her voice was sharp.
“You could at least have the courtesy to tell us what game you’re playing.”
Ryan’s expression had already returned to its usual composure.
He looked at Trevor.
“Business doesn’t always go the way you expect.”
His voice was indifferent.
“You lost the bid. That’s something your family needs to deal with.”
Trevor’s eyes darkened.
“So it really was you.”
Ryan said nothing.
Trevor’s jaw tightened.
“The Knight family already has enough problems.”
It was no secret anymore that Nicholas had lost his position and that the Knight family was facing serious pressure.
“And instead of dealing with your own mess, you’re deliberately making things harder for the Robinson family?”
Trevor’s voice hardened.
“Whatever happened between our families because of Ariel, the Robinson family didn’t start this fight. Your family broke the agreement first.”
He stared at Ryan.
“How long are you planning to keep coming after us?”
Ryan gave a quiet, humorless laugh.
“I couldn’t care less what the Robinson family does to the Knight family.”
Trevor’s expression tightened.
“If you want to fight us, that’s your choice.”
Ryan’s gaze became colder.
“But don’t pretend this is about business.”
He looked directly at Trevor.
“Your family keeps using favors to control Rose.”
Trevor’s eyes narrowed.
“Be careful.”
Ryan ignored the warning.
“At some point, you stopped caring about whether Rose was actually happy and started caring about whether she chose you.”
Trevor’s expression hardened.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Don’t I?”
Ryan’s voice remained calm.
“You keep talking about what you’ve done for Rose.”
His gaze shifted briefly toward Julia.
“Your mother does the same thing.”
Trevor’s hands clenched.
Ryan continued.
“You want Rose to remember every favor your family has ever done for her.”
His eyes returned to Trevor.
“But somehow, no one wants to talk about what your family did to her.”
Trevor’s expression turned colder.
“What exactly do you think you know?”
Ryan didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Julia.
“President Ellis.”
Julia’s face changed.
“You and Sophia knew each other more than twenty years ago, didn’t you?”
The moment Ryan said the name, Julia froze.
Trevor’s head snapped toward his mother.
His hands slowly tightened into fists.
His expression changed completely.
Ryan watched them both.
The reaction told him everything he needed to know.
Trevor’s eyes sharpened.
“So that’s it.”
He stared at Ryan.
“You found out.”
His voice was low.
“And that’s why you’ve been going after the Robinson family.”
