Bailee was standing just ahead, chatting with someone and slowly walking in Kayla’s direction.
The dim yellow glow of the streetlamp cast a soft halo around her, making her silhouette appear warm and gentle, just like the way Kayla had remembered her–familiar, comforting, and heartbreakingly beautiful. Kayla’s eyes welled up almost instantly.
Just as a fragile breath of relief passed through her lips, Kayla’s gaze caught a speeding car barreling toward Bailee from across the street. Her heart skipped a beat as fear gripped her like a vice.
The roar of the engine was swallowed up by the constant traffic hum, turning the vehicle into a silent predator, gliding like death cloaked in shadow. It hurtled toward Bailee without warning.
The blinding beam of the headlights, sudden and fierce, cut through the dark like a monster’s eyes, sending chills straight down Kayla’s spine.
“Mom!” Kayla’s scream tore through the night air, raw with panic and despair, her voice cracking uncontrollably.
She bolted toward Bailee with every ounce of strength in her body. The pavement beneath her felt like it was stretching endlessly, every step heavier than the last.
Hearing a familiar voice in the distance, Bailee turned around with a puzzled look on her face.
Her brows lifted as her eyes met Kayla’s, and a bright smile began to bloom across her face. She looked genuinely happy.

The truck was closing in fast. Kayla’s heart nearly stopped pounding. Her eyes burned red as tears spilled freely, blurring her vision.
“Mom, move,” Kayla cried out, her voice nearly breaking.
‘Why? Why did I come back if I still can’t change this? I was given a second chance. Am I really going to stand here and watch her die again?‘ Kayla’s thoughts screamed inside her head.
But then, her fear twisted into raw determination. She thought to herself, ‘No. I won’t accept this. I was given a second chance for a reason. Things can change. I’ll make sure they change. I won’t let the same nightmare repeat itself.
Her legs moved faster as she pushed her body beyond its limits, racing death itself. She shouted again, louder this time, her voice echoing down the street, “Mom, get out of the way p>
Her cry carried through the night like a siren, heavy with fear and anguish. This time, Bailee finally realized something was
wrong.
She turned her head and finally saw the truck storming toward her at full speed. The screech of rubber grinding against asphalt pierced the night as the driver slammed the brakes.
Bailee’s eyes went wide, her expression frozen in terror. Her limbs locked up, paralyzed by panic, her body refusing to move even as the threat came closer and closer. She shut her eyes tight, bracing for the inevitable.
But the pain never came. At the last second, a force slammed into her side and knocked her out of the truck’s path. She hit the ground hard, rolling several feet before coming to a stop on the sidewalk.
Before Bailee could even figure out what happened, the sound of a brutal collision exploded just a few feet away.

“Mom, are you okay?” Kayla scrambled to her feet, rushing to help Bailee sit up.
Bailee opened her eyes slowly and looked around, still dazed.
“Kayla Gosh, you scared the hell out of me,” Bailee gasped, her voice trembling.
Kayla looked Bailee over from head to toe, her hands shaking slightly as she checked for injuries. Once she was certain Bailee was unharmed. Kayla finally let out a deep breath she hadn’t even realized she was holding. Relief washed over her in
waves.
