She’d fallen behind in math herself before, and with Ravenna basically giving up on them–plus the whole mess of not being able to find a decent tutor–she’d been stressed out of her mind. She got why everyone looked so defeated right now,
That was when Ravenna walked in. She took one look at the students slumped over their desks, listened to their dejected murmurs, and let out a mocking smile.
“Weren’t you all so tough before? Now you finally see how pathetic you really are?” Her voice dripped with disdain. “Here’s my advice–go apologize to Class A like good little failures. Accept what you are and stop dreaming about some miraculous comeback p>
The students‘ faces darkened with each word, their dejection curdling into something heavier.
Ravenna showed no hint of guilt. She just dropped one final line. “Weather’s bad today. I don’t feel like teaching. Self–study period p>
She grabbed her lesson plan and walked straight out without a backward glance.
The classroom erupted in angry whispers.
“Isn’t Ms. Nielsen going way too far? I mean, even if our grades suck, that’s not an excuse for her to blow off class every chance she gets. How is she even qualified to be a teacher p>
“Seriously. This is ridiculous p>
Kayla and Payton exchanged a quick glance. Payton caught on immediately and gave her a slight nod.
Kayla let out a determined smile. She walked straight to the front of the classroom.
She slapped her palm against the podium twice–loud enough to make everyone look up. Her gaze swept across the room, taking in each face. When she had their full attention, she raised her voice.
“I know most of us are struggling with the material. But that’s not a reason to give up.” She paused, letting her words sink in. “We don’t have much time left. If we want to catch up and actually do well on finals, I’ve got a plan p>
That got them. The whole class perked up, curiosity sparking in their eyes.
“What kind of plan?” someone called out.
Kayla waited a beat, watching their reactions to ensure everyone was truly listening.
Then she continued, “I know math is where most of us struggle the hardest. But Payton’s really strong in math -she’s even put together a collection of common problem areas from recent years and frequently tested SAT
concepts.
She turned toward Payton, her expression full of trust. “So I’d like Payton to be our math tutor and help everyone catch up p>
Payton smiled confidently and nodded. “No problem. I’ll do my best p>
Kayla looked back at the class. “As for me, I’ll be handling Language Arts.
She continued, “For the other subjects, I’ve already talked to students who excel in specific areas, and we re working on detailed study and teaching plans together. We’ll start with freshman year material and work our way up systematically–one step at a time, building a solid foundation p>
The entire class shot to their feet. “Wait, seriously p>
Everyone looked like they’d just been thrown a lifeline.

The room erupted in cheers. “Oh, thank God. I was this close to giving up. I can’t believe we’re getting a second chance p>
More students joined in the celebration.
