Chapter 737
For the next several days, Lemira kept a discreet eye on Evelina’s activities.
The “two-faced” girl only showed up at school a couple of times to flaunt her jewelry and designer accessories, and then disappeared again. Lemira figured she was most likely avoiding Dorian.
Ever since Dorian had learned about Evelina’s engagement, he’d looked utterly heartbroken. It’s always true-people only cherish what they can’t have. Evelina certainly knew how to keep men hanging on her every move.
Lemira had half-expected Evelina to get cocky and make another trip to the dealership, but in the end, Evelina never went. After her late-night visit to the dealership last time, no one knew what was discussed, but Evelina’s father never made an appearance. Evelina had only met with that distant uncle. Still, it was obvious that this uncle was in contact with Evelina’s father and was aware of the car accident all those years ago. If they couldn’t get Evelina’s father, catching this uncle would be the next best thing. But Lemira was convinced that nabbing Evelina’s father was the key.
Suddenly, Lemira’s phone buzzed with a message: [Hehe, I’m watching you. I know what you’re up to.] She immediately tried to trace the number, but it was a virtual line. Whoever it was had taken precautions.
Lemira didn’t dwell on it, but later that evening, while she was out walking on the track with Stella and the others, she received another message: [There sure are a lot of people out on the field tonight.]
Lemira stopped and glanced around. Sure enough, the place was crowded. But she had no idea who was behind the messages.
“What’s wrong?” Stella had noticed the sudden change in Lemira’s expression.
Lemira just shook her head, kept quiet, and slipped her phone back into her bag. This wasn’t the place for a conversation.
“Lemira, stop right there!”
A group of girls strode purposefully toward them. Lemira recognized one at once- wasn’t this the girl who’d deliberately made things difficult for her at the panel discussion a few days ago? Word was, she was dating the president of the student news club.
Lemira stopped and looked them over. “Did you need something?”
“Lemira, you’re so cruel! We’re all classmates-why did you have the school discipline our dorm leader?”
“Yeah! All she did was gossip a little. Everyone talks-why should she be punished for it?”
Hearing this, Lemira immediately understood why they’d come. Her tone was calm as she replied, “I never asked the school to punish anyone, and I don’t know how the administration handles rumors.”
Stella spoke up, “From what I heard, the school disciplined the person who took the photos and the one who made the post. One secretly took pictures and spread them, the other wrote false things online both deserved consequences.”
Stella didn’t mention any names-she simply made it clear that the real troublemakers were punished if this girl was one of them, it meant she was either the one who’d taken the pictures or the one who’d written the post. She certainly wasn’t innocent
The three girls, who’d arrived so aggressively, suddenly fell silent.
The news club president’s girlfriend looked at Lemira with pleading eyes. “Lemira, I wasn’t spreading rumors. I just accidentally took a photo and sent it to my boyfriend I never thought he’d post anything like that!”
“But that’s not what you said at the discussion the other day.”
Lemira wasn’t about to play the saint. She responded coldly, “You made your choices. Now you have to face the consequences.”
She figured that the girl’s boldness probably meant this wasn’t her first time spreading rumors. And to have the nerve to talk like that in front of the dean—she was really something.
The girl’s face went pale, and she dropped to her knees in front of Lemira. “Lemira, I really was wrong. Please, just forgive me this once.”
The commotion drew a growing crowd. Lemira was somewhat of a campus celebrity these days, and more and more people stopped to watch, whispering among themselves.
“Oh, give it a rest,” Oanice said,
pushing the girl aside. She raised her
voice, “Everyone here has worried
about being smeared on the school
forum It’s about time someone cleaned it up. Maybe this
punishment will finally make people think twice before posting rumors.”
Stella added, “Besides, the school only punished those responsible for starting
rumors. If you got punished, that means you really did something wrong.”
